Re: Attack!

The red beret.

Regimental pride.

O, green berets are all right I suppose.
for bending over and touching your toes,
for playing games and joining in,
for mouthing off and making a din.

For playing at war on practice grounds,
Huffing and puffing and making sounds,
Practicing and getting things right,
Making sure its all right on the night.

Methodical correct and just like that,
this goes there and that is that,
waiting cautiously at the back,
bringing clarity to this attack.

Alas there’s a breed of men I know,
who frown on practice they just know,
they learned it quickly, took it in.
when war comes Im calling them in.

They jump in planes and off they go,
where and when it matters no,
any place on earth will do,
not much fuss and less ado.

The Red Beret they proudly wear,
a little rough and prone to swear,
how to die, they know the score,
asking none for no favour.

The worlds best warriors they surely are,
fighting wars near and far.
It was an honour to this day,
To have worn the Red Beret.

Yasser Arafat

in 29'yasser opened his eyes
to cairo bustle and irradiant skies
a successful family-his life began
his father a merchant-no also ran

he lost his mum when only five
to a maternal uncle-he would arrive
his father a cold dispassionate man
more for business than family plan

In 52' his father would die
yasser not attending nor reason why
in 56' he gained a degree
civil engineering it seemed to be

his own small business he did attend
profits going to al fatahs end
al fatah formed terror cells
occasionally blowing up themselves

in 64' the PLO was created
israels destruction clearly stated
then black september came about
hussein of jordan throwing them out

to a troubled lebanon they did retreat
there to meet a jewish elite
after this Intifada was formed
continual harassment was performed

palestinians dying from Israeli shot
the arabs beginning to lose the plot
in 88' geneva he went
declaring PLO fury-clearly spent

peace to all he would cry
but militancy-he could not deny
in ‘94 the prix nobel
rabin- perez-their share as well

so oslo it was he reached his peak
from there on in his woes were deep
the walking bombs were giving their all
the youth of palestine against the wall

General Vo Nguyen Giap

General Giap.
Who defeated the French at Dien Bien phu
and forced a political defeat on combined
forces in the Vietnam War

In fairness to the combined forces [largely American]
they won every major land battle that was fought
in the Vietnam War including the Tet Offensive.

They were indeed military victorious but lost the
political initative.
--------------------
A small village in North Vietnam,
Is where the Great Generals life began,
In village huts with muck packed floors,
The French commanded and made the laws.

An Xa village was quite unknown,
For hundreds of years rice was grown,
Goats and animals moved around,
Muck and dung covered the ground.

But young Giap wasn't the same,
Inside his head was an excellent brain,
He didn't like the French in command,
It wasn't their culture it wasn't their land.

Off to Hoa, to school he went,
On intellectual progress, he was bent,
At just 13, his nationalist mind,
Was causing trouble a mature kind.

This precociuos child the French noticed,
The Surete added him to their list,
Not knowing then, he would bid them adieu,
At the battle of Dien Bien Phu.

A degree in economics he would attain,
His countries freedom, his earnest aim,
Military tactics he studied with zeal,
The intelligence to master, and turn, for real.

At Dien Bien Phu he made his name,
A place in government he did attain,
With Directive 15, the North made its claim,
Unification was their ultimate aim.

So General Giap was placed in command,
The mandate, to unite and free his land,
Political adventure the stuff of dreams,
Only unification, by military means.

All through the sixties the battle raged.
To setpiece battles, the North rarely engaged,
A guerilla campaign, Giap wanted and got,
Time was irrelevant, in his little plot.

But time was important, on the American scene,
American dead on the TV screen,
After Tet they knew it was lost,
Giap had won at enormous cost,

Vietnam is free as ever its been,
Whether its better remains to be seen,
The best laid plans of mice and men,
They did put humpty together again.

Guy Mollet

Guy Mollet became prime minister of a French coalition government in January 1956.
Later that year president Gamal Abdul Nasser of Egypt announced he intended to nationalize the Suez Canal. The shareholders, mainly British and French, ask for compensation. Nasser replied “let them choke on their tears”. The French and British
attacked, the canal was unblocked and compensation was duly paid up by 1963.

Guy Mollet. French Prime Minister 1956- May 1957.

1905-1975.

Born in Flers of ordinary stock,
A textile factory his fathers lot.
But Guy was different in many ways,
Showing talent from early days.

A teacher’s job at Arras school,
Education his working tool.
When Hitler came he stood his ground,
Giving the Gestapo the run around.

French resistance his chosen task,
Many questions the Germans asked.
Three times captured then freed again,
Skilfully avoiding the Auchwitz train.

After the war the political game,
National Socialism his ultimate aim.
Leon Blum he worked for first,
Right wing politics they reversed.

In ’56 he reached his peak,
Thus for France, he could speak.
French PM he became,
Soon embroiled in Nasser’s game.

With Anthony Eden at his side
Twould soon be known far and wide,
The Suez Canal was open again,
Another successful military campaign.

Compensation duly paid,
After this highly skilfull raid.
Well done Anthony, well done Guy
Well done soldiers from the sky.

Moonlight Sonata

In November 14 1940 500 planes of the the German Luftwaffe bombed Coventry city center.Their code name for this operation was Moonlight Sonata. Edna Viner was an off duty probationary nurse.

A lovely starry moonlit night,
With extra incandescent light,
Parachutes with chandelier flares,
Edna Viner sits and stares.

Alighting from a city bus,
Bemused and blinking, what’s the fuss?
Air raid sirens howled and moaned,
“I bet it’s Birmingham" she groaned.

“Not here I hope, it’s my night out,
My one and only drinking bout”
Then calling in to see her friend,
Her leisure time, soon to end.

At once the symphony began,
Coventry reacts to Hitler’s plan,
Incendiary bombs clatter down,
Like Christmas lights all around.

Buckets of sand douse the flames,
Ladies help in human chains,
Searchlights probed the sky around,
Fire engine's bells resound.

The sharp bark of Bofor guns,
The glistening sweat of Coventry’s sons,
High explosive bombs thud down,
To shake the heart of this boom town.

Fire watchers on roof tops high,
Silhouetted against the sky,
Buildings seem to leave the ground,
Bricks and mortar spewed around.

The old Cathedral gets it next,
As if deserved of no respect,
High explosive bombs come first,
Then when the lofty steeple bursts.

Showers of incendiaries fall all round,
Blackening the very ground,
Just one great wall of searing fire,
For those inside a funeral pyre.

Cov and Warwick's hospital now.
All the staff survived somehow,
They worked all night and did their best.
Still 520 were laid to rest.

Orde Charles Wingate

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The most unconventional General in the British army
during the Second World War was undoubtedly Major
General Orde Charles Wingate. His eccentricity in
matters of dress, diet, and military operations had
caused comment even before the Second World War.
Military they were not successful , therefore Wingate
can only be regarded as a pioneer in that field.

Major General Orde Charles Wingate DSO.
1903- 1944

Unconventional in any day,
In diet, in dress, in military fray,
Drawing attention the year he began,
Eccentricity the master plan.

Fluent in Arabic he went to Sudan,
But shortly after a change of plan,
To Palestine the next event,
Where Jew and Arab wouldn't relent.

Jews he favoured in this timeless war,
Advising how, to settle the score,
Night patrols and surprise tactics,
Developing his bag of tricks.

Diverse, changing, never the same,
Frustrating Arabs in this little game,
Haile Selasse wanted him next,
Italian soldiers his country annexed.

Wingates skill came to the fore,
Soon Italians reigned no more,
Haile Selassie back on the throne,
Ruling Ethiopia virtually alone.

Burma next and different terrain,
Japanese soldiers ruled this domain,
Wingate ruthlessly over the top,
His badly wounded instantly shot.

But Japanese soldiers not easily fooled,
In jungle tactics efficiently schooled,
Burmese, Ghurkhas, and British elite,
Speedily outwitted and made to retreat.

Deep penetration his last campaign,
For him a theory it would remain,
In 44' he took to the sky,
At 41 years young Wingate would die.

Cpl-Hitler

When the First World War broke out Hitler said.
"Overpowered by stormy enthusiasm- I fell down
on my knees and thanked heaven for granting me
the good fortune of being permitted to live at this time".

Cpl. Adolph 'Adi' Hitler. 1889 -1945.

Hitler was rescued from his drifting life,
By rumblings of war and oncoming strife,
Germany not Austria his leanings were bent,
His spirits lifted by this awesome event.

The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand,
By a man named Princip from Serbian land,
Austro-Hungary attacked the Serbs.
Then Russia and France called on reserves.

Belgian nuetrality the Germans ignored,
The British lion -awakened then roared,
Hitler signing for Bavarian command,
Overcome with enthusiasm for his adopted land.

For Hitler the army a base and a home,
Stopping his restless urge to roam,
With the 'List' regiment he first saw war,
At Ypres in Belgium he started his tour.

Decorated early, in this vicious war,
The Iron Cross 2nd class he very soon wore.
Competent, courageous, alert and keen,
A credit to any fighting machine.

Between actions quietly reserved,
Drawing and philosophy studiously observed,
No presents or cards at Christmas time,
His pet dog 'Foxl' suited him fine.

Surviving Ypres and making his name,
The battle at Somme his next little game,
A wound in the leg caused him to fall,
Convalescing, his nature, not suited at all.

Back in action for the last great push,
Heading for Paris in a desperate rush,
Nearly, the name of this little game,
A desperate attempt before Americans came.

A First Class Iron Cross Hitlers reward,
A Jewish officer gave the award,
At the second Ypres in a gas attack,
Partly blinded - he would be back.

Jb a coy 3 para
The Iron Cross First Class normally only given to
Commissioned officers.

Field Marshall Erwin Rommel.
Iron Cross First Class.
Pour Le Merite.1891-1944

Born in Heidenheim an der Brenze,
His father he viewed with deference,
His father a teacher at the local school,
Noted for, authoritarian rule.

Telling Erwin where his future would be,
Either schoolteacher or military,
Erwin selecting the warrior class,
Macho men with courage and dash.

'The Fox' was educated at Tubigen,
In 1910 he joined the military men,
As an officer cadet at Wurttenburg,
Such a meteoric rise they'd never heard.

In just six months a Sergeants rank,
All his buddies he did outflank,
12 months later a commission was his,
Showing recruits the tactical biz.

1914 he joined the Great War,
His tactical talents came to the fore,
Finding weak spots in the front line,
 Stalemate he began to undermine.

The Iron Cross was his reward,
By buddies and seniors he was adored,
But defeat and ignominy the final score,
Alsace and Lorraine theirs no more.

Between wars he studied his craft,
By a man named Hitler he was asked,
To Captain his bodyguard and keep secure,
Whilst Adolph applied anti Jewish law.

When Rommels daughter Gertrud wed,
She was ask if hubby was Aryan bred,
An ardent admirer of Hitlers regime,
He believed Aryans were supreme.

After Poland’s crushing defeat,
He stood on the podium with Hitlers elite,
Rewarded and promoted for this little stance,
A tank division and sent to France.

With blitzkrieg tactics France soon fell,
Paris reduced to an SS hell,
Erwin’s next task on Egyptian sand,
Victory acclaimed in the Pharoes land.

But a man named Monty turned the tide,
42' began Marshall Rommel’s slide,
Ousted from Egypt and sent to France,
Badly wounded in the allied advance.

Home for sick leave and well earned rest,
The SS ordered to make his arrest,
On Hitlers life an attempt was made,
And Rommel a suspected renegade.

Ordered to die by suicide,
 Hitlers wishes, he would abide,
His reputation intact , family safe,
After a national funeral he went to his grave.

Marshal Georgi Zhukov

The German Soviet War 1941/45 was the most
destructive in history, 27 million lives were lost.
The military commander who deserves the most
credit for this victory is Marshal Georgi Zhukov.

Marshal Georgi Zhukov.
1896-1974.

The Zhukov family were desperately poor,
With a Tsarist regime making the law,
Just ten years of age mature of years,
Georgi left home his father in tears.

To Moscow then and his uncles abode,
Expected to work and share the load,
A furriers apprenticeship he began,
Keen, ambitious, no also ran.

A pitiless master leading the way,
They rose at dawn for a twelve hour day,
When day was done and bodies tired,
The factory floor was where they retired.

Childhood days were quickly spent,
Call up papers officialdom sent,
A natural gift for military things
Exited by war and all it brings.

The First World War came and went,
Georgi blossomed in this event,
But in 1917 his country withdrew,
The Tsarist regime was over threw.

With reds and whites fighting it out,
The reds victorious in this little bout,
So communist Russia, it became,
Georgi excelled in this red domain.

When the Japanese invaded Mongolian land,
Zhukov showed his powers of command,
Wrecking the Japs in a counter attack,
He gave the Mongolians their country back.

But in 41 they were ill prepared,
When Hitler decided they would not be spared,
Barbarossa he named, this campaign,
For Russian lands he made his claim.

Zhukov was given the army command,
He wanted the job of defending his land,
At Stalingrad, his hour would come,
Field Marshall Paulus was made to succumb.

At Kursk he faced the Germans with tanks,
The world biggest tank battle, this still ranks,
The Germans crushed and made to give way,
On Russian soil, they'd had their day.

Ukraine, Romania, and Poland were next,
The whole of his country and others annexed,
Zhukov the genius was hailed in awe,
Victorious Russia, had won this war.

After taking Berlin he returned to his land,
Dabbling in politics and some military command,
In 74, he would eventually fall,
They laid him to rest in the Kremlin wall.

Audie Murphy-actor-soldier

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Audie Murphy 1924 -1971.
He won every military medal his country could give.

A hoe and a plough he was born to steer.
In order to eat and bring good cheer,
All day long in the sweltering sun,
Such is the lot of a share croppers son.

Baby faced Murph and brothers to,
Sweated it out without fuss and ado,
Keeping the young ones happy and fed,
Awaiting dusk, then exhausted to bed.

Across the pond on foreign soil,
A man named Hitler started to spoil,
Pinching land and on the make,
All before him started to shake,

The winds of war caught Murphy’s ears,
At just 16, so tender in years,
The Marines refused him told him no!
But Murphy determined to give it a go.

To the army’s office he showed his face,
His sharp shooting skill noted apace,
He fainted and collapsed on his first foot drill,
Not really the stuff to give Hitler a chill.

As a post office clerk they gave him a slot,
Sorting mail would be his little lot,
Overseas he went at last.
A chance he saw to give it a blast.

To Morocco, Sicily, and Italy to,
Upon Anzio beach his talents grew,
The kid from Texas began to grow,
The Army was in for the lord Mayors show..

Promoted to Sergeant quick as a flash,
Baby faced Murph showed nerve and dash,
Guts galore under enemy fire,
Even wounded he would not retire.

In just twelve months under fire,
A lieutenants pip he would acquire,
Punching a rookie on a fiery day,
Forgetting the rules in the heat of fray.

In operation Anvil for the freedom of France,
He sure led the Germans a merry dance,
North to Strasbourg his luck would fail,
A dangerous wound would leave him frail,

240 enemy was his final toll,
A soldiers soldier in heart and soul,
In 71 he fell from the sky,
A faulty plane caused him to die.

In Arlington Cemetery this great soldier lies,
His people pass with respect and sighs,
Never again will this planet see.
A supreme warrior as mighty as he.
