Socialized Medicine
An Israeli doctor said to a medical conference, "Medicine in my country is so advanced, we can take a kidney out of one person, put it into another and have him looking for work in six weeks!"
The German doctor stood up and said, "Well medicine in my county is so advanced, we can take a lung out of one person and put it into another and have him looking for work in 4 weeks"
The Russian doctor got up and said "My country is even more advanced, we can remove half a heart from one person, put it into another and have them both looking for work in just 2 weeks!"
Not to be outdone, the American doctor stood up and addressed the conference, "Well", he said, "My country is so far advanced in medicine, we can take an A$$hole out of Chicago, put him in the White House and have half the country looking for work in 24 hours

Google News Eight killed in attack on US nursing home
21 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AFP) — A heavily-armed gunman shot dead eight people, many elderly and infirm patients, in a North Carolina nursing home Sunday, authorities said, announcing that the shooter was in custody.
They identified the alleged gunman as 45-year-old Robert Stewart, but shed no light on why he went on a shooting spree at the Pine Lake nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina, a village of just 2,000 people.
"This morning a lone gunman came to the Pine Lake nursing home in Carthage and as a result of his actions today, he is facing eight counts of first degree murder," said Maureen Krueger, the Moore county district attorney.
She said the victims included a 98-year-old patient, four victims in their 80s, two in their 70s, and a nurse.

Six dead in US shooting attacks
Aerial shots of the motorway where police chased the gunman at high speed
A man has surrendered to police in the US state of Washington after a series of shootings left six people dead.
The killings took place at various places in the north-west of the state.
A sheriff's deputy who went to investigate an incident was among those killed; two construction workers were found shot dead nearby.
The man gave himself up at a sheriff's office in Mount Vernon after a chase along an Interstate motorway, during which a motorist was killed.
The suspect was reportedly known to authorities as "someone with a mental illness", Trooper Keith Leary told the Associated Press news agency.
High-speed chase
Police say the deputy sheriff went to investigate reports of a disturbance at a residence in Skagit County, north of Seattle, at around 1400 (2100 GMT) on Tuesday.
When she did not return and failed to answer radio calls, the alarm was raised.
The deputy's body was found at the scene alongside a second victim.
Then the construction workers were found and another body was discovered on a street a short distance away.
Law enforcement officials managed to track the gunman and a high speed car chase ensued on the state's busiest motorway, during which the suspect is reported to have been shooting wildly.
A motorist was shot and killed on Interstate 5 before the suspect fled South at speeds of up to 90mph (145km/h) with troopers, sheriff's deputies and Mount Vernon police in pursuit.
One of the four people wounded during the shooting spree included a Washington State Patrol trooper shot while trying to chase the gunman, police said.

Re: OK...Which people are tougher? U.S. or British?
By Kevin Johnson, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — A surge in fatal shootings has contributed to a dramatic increase in deaths of law enforcement officers during the first six months of this year, the highest midyear body count in nearly three decades, according to a report due out today.
The annual count by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund found that 39 officers were killed in shootings, up from 27 during the first six months of last year.
The abrupt midyear increase comes less than a year after the organization reported that 145 officers were killed in the line of duty in all of 2006, the lowest annual number in eight years. That year, fatal shootings dropped to 52, from 59 in 2005.
"These are the most alarming increases in officer fatalities I've ever seen for a midyear period," said Craig Floyd, the memorial fund's chairman and chief executive officer. "It's somewhat shocking. Is there something at work that nobody has gotten their arms around?" he said

The American gun mess
What Do the District of Columbia’s New Gun Laws Do?
• Allow registration of pistols, revolvers and long guns for self-defense use in the home.
• Ban assault weapons and junk guns.
• Prevent persons with a history of violence (within five years of application) from registering a gun.
• Prevent person with convictions for domestic violence, or who are the subject of a protective order (within five years of application), from registering a gun.
• Prevent persons with multiple alcohol- or drug-related offenses (within five years of application) from registering a gun.
• Require that an applicant complete a firearms safety training course.
• Limit an applicant to registering one gun every 30 days.
• Ban high-capacity ammunition magazines that hold over 10 rounds.
• Tighten gun dealer licensing requirements.
• Require that all new semiautomatic pistols be “microstamped” by 2011. Microstamping technology utilizes lasers to make microscopic engravings on the breech face and firing pin of a gun. As the gun is fired, a code identifying the weapon's serial number is stamped onto the cartridge. The technology promises to greatly aid law enforcement officials in investigating homicides and other gun crimes.

Gun crime
At least 12 killed in Binghamton, New York shootingDaniel Nasaw in Washington guardian.co.uk, Friday 3 April 2009 20.12 BST Article history

A gunman killed at least 12 and took as many as 41 people hostage at an upstate New York immigrant counselling centre this morning, shocking a nation already reeling from several mass shootings this year.
The violence rocked the small university city of Binghamton, three hours from New York City, when at least one gunman entered the American Civic Association building after blocking a rear exit, then with a high-powered rifle mowed down people assembled for English classes, citizenship counselling and other services for immigrants. Survivors of the initial assault fled to a basement room and more than a dozen hid in a closet, WBNG television reported.
The shooting began about 10.30am. Police quickly established a perimeter around the building and tried to get in contact with the panicked survivors inside. Local television station WBNG reported that a gunman had been killed. Reports from inside the building referred to a single gunman of Asian descent, in his 20s.
New York governor David Paterson confirmed that "12 or 13" people had been killed and said he was soon to fly to Binghamton with other public officials.
"I speak for all of New York when I offer my prayers for the victims and families of this tragedy," he said in a statement.
Details of the shooting remained hazy in the hours after the assault, including the death toll and the number of hostages. The scene on the street outside the centre was one of controlled panic. Heavily armed local, county and state police were surrounding the building in Binghamton, a city of about 45,000 people, roughly three hours north-west of New York City, and an FBI hostage negotiation team was en route to the scene. A nearby high school was locked down.
Between 20 and 40 people were held hostage, and some hostages had been released. At least four people were taken out on stretchers, and as many as 10 ambulances rushed to the scene.
"The scene within minutes turned into one just flooded with police," WNBF radio news director Bob Joseph said.
The city, which has shrunk in population as its industrial base declined in recent years, is home to a large campus of the State University of New York.
Linda Miller, a spokeswoman at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, said that a university student was being treated at the emergency room but said she didn't know the nature of the injuries.
"We're on full alert anticipating we're going to get additional casualties," Miller told the Associated Press.
The area is in a commercial strip near the Chenango river. It is unclear whether the gunman had targeted the centre because it aids immigrants. Anti-immigrant animus has lead to individual assaults across the country, but immigrants have not previously been targeted for deadly violence en mass.
The United States, which has some of the laxest gun control laws of the developed world, has for years been beset by seemingly random mass shootings.
Last week, a gunman killed eight people in a North Carolina nursing home. Last month, an Alabama man killed ten people, including several members of his family, before turning the gun on himself. The largest mass shooting in American history occurred in April 2007, when a mentally ill student at Virginia Tech University killed 32 people and wounded many others before killing himself.
This month marks the tenth anniversary of the killing of 13 at Columbine High School in Colorado by two disgruntled students.
Many states have few strictures on gun ownership beyond barring convicted felons and the severely mentally ill from possession firearms.
Gun control has largely fizzled as a national political issue, as Democrats, who have in the past promoted stricter gun laws, have bowed to the well-organised pro-gun opposition. The Obama administration supports the renewal of an expired federal ban on assault weapons.
