Homic
BY JENNIFER LEBOVICH

The number of homicides in unincorporated Miami-Dade County rose significantly in 2008, but robberies and burglaries were down, county officials said Wednesday.
Homicides climbed from 79 in 2007 to 97 last year, a 23 percent increase. Of those, 22 were domestic incidents.
''A tougher pill to swallow is that homicides were up in 2008,'' County Mayor Carlos Alvarez said at a news conference.
There was no clear reason for the upturn in homicides, though Miami-Dade police Director Robert Parker said the number of domestic murders was unusually high and had remained a significant percentage of all homicides over the past two years.
Robberies, burglaries and car thefts were down. Robberies decreased 4 percent; burglaries dropped 5 percent; car thefts were down 9 percent.
Alvarez highlighted those achievements, adding that specialized units have helped lead to that downward trend.
The figures do not include murder cases in cities that contract with Miami-Dade police. Several local communities, including Doral, Opa-locka and Homestead, contract with Miami-Dade police for law enforcement assistance.
They also do not include cases classified as justifiable or vehicular homicides.
For the first weeks of 2009, homicides are down 40 percent compared with the same time period last year, Alvarez added.
Miami-Dade officials released the crime statistics for unincorporated areas of the county at police department headquarters.
This year, the department will add seven mobile operations units -- one for each district -- to increase presence in the community.
Alvarez also touted the success of the county's nearly 2-year-old gun bounty program, in which tipsters get money for calls that lead to illegal weapons.
Last year, 266 illegal guns were recovered and 165 arrests made.
Alvarez stressed the importance of the public being aware and calling in tips to police when they know about crimes.
Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers got nearly 4,500 tips last year, leading to 449 arrests and the clearance of almost 500 cases.

Re: OK...Which people are tougher? U.S. or British?
he United States has the largest number of privately-owned guns in the world. Frequent gun violence poses a serious threat to people's life and property security. There are an estimated 250 million privately-owned firearms in the United States. Almost every American, even ex-criminals with felony records and minors, has firearms. The Associated Press reported on January 29, 2007 that about 410,000 Floridians were licensed to carry hidden guns, including 1,400 who had pleaded guilty or no contest to felonies, thanks to loopholes, errors and miscommunication of authorities.
In the United States, about 30,000 people die from gun wounds every year (Update 2-Senate Passes Gun Bill in Response to Rampage, Reuters, December 19, 2007). The USA Today reported on December 5,2007 that gun killings have climbed 13 percent overall since 2002. An estimated 25 percent of all violent crime incidents were committed by an armed offender. The presence of a firearm was involved in 9 percent of these incidents (Criminal Victimization 2006, U.S. Department of Justice, www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs). According to a report by the U.S.

Re: OK...Which people are tougher? U.S. or British?
TSBURGH - Does the name Byran Uyesugi ring a bell? Odds are, probably not. What about Robert A. Hawkins? Or Mark Barton? Terry Ratzmann? Robert Stewart?
Each entered the national consciousness when he picked up a gun and ended multiple lives. Uyesugi, 1999, Hawaii office building, seven dead. Hawkins, 2007, Nebraska shopping mall, nine dead. Barton, Ratzmann and Stewart - 24 dead among them in 1999 (Atlanta brokerage offices), 2005 (Wisconsin church service) and last week (North Carolina rehab center).
And each has been largely forgotten as the parade of multiple killings in America melts into an indistinguishable blur. We bemoan, we mourn, we move on.
What's even more disturbing is that the list above was cherry picked from a far lengthier tally of recent mass shootings in the United States. And now, this weekend, on a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in Pittsburgh, the lives of three police officers ended in gunfire after a domestic dispute turned lethal.
The mass shootings that left 14 people dead in Binghamton, N.Y., on Friday were horrifying, depressing, nationally wrenching.
They also were, to some extent, unsurprising in a society where the term "mass shooting" has lost its status as unthinkable aberration and become mere fodder for a fresh news cycle.
Even in a media-saturated nation that encourages short memories, these numbers are conversation-stopping: Forty-seven people dead in the last month in American mass shootings and their aftermaths. It's to the point where Saturday, the mayor of Binghamton found himself offering Pittsburgh its sympathies.
Put aside the debate about guns. This isn't about policy.
It's about asking the urgent question: What is happening in the American psyche that prevents people from defusing their own anguish and rage before they end the lives of others? Why are we killing each other?

End the gun fairs
April 10, 2009 Spread the World>
America's Weak Gun Laws Exposed on National Television
Dear John,
We wanted to notify you about two exciting television pieces that will air this weekend. These programs will highlight America's weak gun laws and some inspiring young activists who are trying to strengthen them:
The first will air tonight, Friday, April 10, on "20/20" on ABC at 10:00 p.m. Entitled, "If Only I Had a Gun," the segment follows Omar Samaha, the brother of a Virginia Tech massacre victim, at a Virginia gun show as he purchases ten guns within one hour WITHOUT UNDERGOING A SINGLE BACKGROUND CHECK.
The second is a "60 Minutes" segment on CBS that airs on Sunday, April 12, at 7:00 p.m. Leslie Stahl interviews Omar Samaha, and Lily Habtu, a survivor who was shot multiple times at Virgina Tech, about their efforts to close the Gun Show Loophole (which allows private sellers to sell guns at the events without conducting background checks) in Virginia. "60 Minutes" also asks Virginia lawmakers why they sided with the gun lobby and voted against closing the loophole this January.
We hope you can tune into these weekend programs, which are certain to be both compelling and educational.
Sincerely,
Josh Horwitz

Urge Obama Administration to Reinstate Ban on Concealed Handguns in National Parks
On March 19, the United States District Court issued an injunction against the implementation of a Bush Administration rule allowing visitors to carry loaded, concealed handguns in National Parks. The rule had been challenged through a lawsuit filed by the Association of National Park Rangers, the Coalition of National Park Retirees, and National Parks Conservation Association.
Judge Colleen Kollar-Ketally found that the Bush Administration’s rulemaking process was “astoundingly flawed” because they “abdicated their [National Environmental Policy Act] obligations” and “ignored substantial information in the administrative record concerning environmental impacts.”
The Obama Administration now has until April 20 to review the rule and indicate its course of action in response to the injunction, and this is where we need your help. Please click here to urge the Obama Administration to discard the Bush rule permanently. Tell them that loaded, concealed handguns have no place in our National Parks!
We must act immediately to compel Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to abandon the Bush rule. Thank you for your continued efforts to keep our National Parks safe for all Americans.
Sincerely,
Josh Horwitz
Executive Director

Re: OK...Which people are tougher? U.S. or British?
If we, the people of the United States of America, again lose our freedom it will be by our own lack of courage and faith and manhood.
Tonight States’ Rights are restored. Guard those rights as you would guard your lives. They were intended for just that purpose. A centralized government is a centralized evil.
On the day when you again allow abominable men to confiscate your freedom, your money, your lives, your private property, your manhood and your sacred honor, in the name of ‘security’ or ‘national emergency’ you will die, and never again shall you be free. If plotters again destroy your Republic, they will do it by your greedy and ignorant assent, by your disregard of your neighbors’ rights, by your apathy and your stupidity. We were brought to the brink of universal death and darkness because we had become that most contemptible of people - an angerless one. Keep alive and vivid all your righteous anger against traitors, against those who would abrogate your Constitution, against those who would lead you to wars with false slogans and cunning appeals to your patriotism.
For, remember, if you die in prison, you will have built that prison. If your sons are again conscripted, you will have penned the writ. If a company of malignant men again assumes control of your lives, you will have given them that control...
Always, the people are responsible for wicked lawmakers, oppressors, exploiters, criminals in government, tyrants in power, thieves, liars, malefactors and murderers in the capitals of the world. You, the man in the street, the man in the factory and in the shop, the man on the farm, the man in the office, you, the man everywhere, are guilty of the creatures whose crimes against you have been so monstrous, and will be again, by your own consent - if you give it...
...A wise man distrusts his neighbor. A wiser man distrust both his neighbor and himself. The wisest man of all distrusts his government. Therefore, be watchful and sleepless; be brave, be strong; be without fear. This is not the end. Villains will try, again and again and again, to enslave you, until the end of time. It is in your hands to defeat them and to destroy them, whenever or however they appear. If you do not, then may God have mercy on your souls!

Re: OK...Which people are tougher? U.S. or British?
Three more mass shootings in the US
By David Walsh
April 2009
In the latest social atrocities in the US, three lone gunmen killed more than 20 people Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, in Binghamton, New York, a Vietnamese immigrant shot 13 people to death at an immigration center before turning a weapon on himself. A 22-year-old white supremacist ambushed Pittsburgh police Saturday morning, killing three of them. A Washington state man apparently murdered five of his own children on Saturday, then shot himself in his car.
The slayings and suicides took place in the context of two significant social phenomena: growing misery for wide layers of the population, reflected in the jobless figures announced Friday, and a stock market surge, as the financial elite expresses confidence that the Obama administration will do nothing to impinge on its wealth. While the eruption of personal violence has innumerable immediate causes, the strains created by the economic crisis undoubtedly play a role.
In the Binghamton massacre, according to the authorities, 41-year-old Jiverly Wong, a Vietnamese immigrant, after blocking its back door exit with his vehicle, burst into the American Civic Association—an immigrant aid organization—and opened fire on employees and students. Wong, who wore a bullet-proof vest and fired two handguns, killed 13 before committing suicide. The episode is the worst in the US since the Virginia Tech mass killings in 2007.
