Flushing, using gender selected semen.
Has anybody done this? What were your results? What protocal did you use? I am thinking about trying it but I would like to see if anybody else has tried it?

I`ve been told by one of the ET companys that as sexed semen is not as vigourous as normal semen, the ET results will be more unfertilised embryos

Re: …
I figure that will be the case but I am willing to accept some infertiles for more efficiency. I would also be willing to use more semen. One thing we have to remember is that ET vets get paid by the embryo, they don't care if it is heifer embryo or bull embryo.

Et vet says that its the quantity is the problem but he also said that this could be overcome by putting the semen closer to the eggs. I havent heard anyone trying it but it does solve the numbers problem. I takes more ability but maybe it is worth a try?

Re: Flushing, using gender selected semen.
I haven't done it, but our ET vets have done extensive research on it that has been presented at ET practitioner conferences. They recommend only using it on virgin heifers or young cows - the key is that they have a small uterus that is in good shape.
After trying a variety of protocols their final recommendation is to use 2 straws of sexed semen at 12 hours from the beginning of standing heat, and another 2 at 24 hours, so 4 straws of sexed semen total. The timing is crucial so close observation of the donor is necessary.
Their results showed that on average you would obtain about 90% as many fertilized female embryos as you would from a non-sexed flush which would have more fertilized embryos but more males.
I have heard of people that have tried it with 2 or 3 straws and only got 1 fertilized egg.

Re: Flushing, using gender selected semen.
I would guess it would depend on how many eggs the cow releases as the more eggs more chance to fertilise them, also how saleable would bull calves be how many recpts have you got and can you find a bull that is worth flushing with to sexed semen

Re: Flushing, using gender selected semen.
I have flushed a cow to sexed Finest and got all unfertile embryos, but I flushed that same cow with plain semen and still got unfertile embryos. I can't blame that on the sexed semen. Sexed semen will work in flushing a cow, they are having pretty good luck flushing jersey cows. I think you should use 2 straws at 12 hours and 2 straws at 24 hours, but thats not enough you should also deep horn breed when you breed her. When you get half as many pregnant with sexed semen you should still get the same number of heifers and not have to use all your recipts on bull calves.

Flushing, using gender selected semen.
Maybe it would be worth checking the ERCR lists to see which bull supply the best swimmers!

Yes of course you are right but I couldnt resist having a look anyway! Finest as it happpens is quite good at +2 but Best is zero, not a great candidate for sexed.

Flushing, using gender selected semen.
99 for Best vs. 90 for Finest . Looking at the list is a serious eye opener with some bulls at -4. I think Talent is the best with +7. He would make great sexed if he was not in such demand. Astronomical is also very good. This info should be put on the sire catalogues, it's really useful info.

Where can you find the ercr for each bull? I have never noticed it?

Re: Flushing, using gender selected semen.
The main problem with sexed semen is that the sperm dose in each straw is only 2 million compared with 15 million in a conventional straw. Yes, you can improve the odds of fertilisation with deep uterine insemination - but this needs to be done under aseptic conditions with an epidural - it is basically depositing the semen close to the uterotubular junction, as invasive as flushing. I would only use sexed semen on maiden heifers and those cows with a good record of producing high ratios of fertilised embryos - this is not necessarily dependent upon the age of the cow, or the size of the tract. We have flushed a nine year old cow successfully to Crichel Principal in the early days of sexed semen and got 12 female embryos. It is completely contraindicated to use sexed semen on any cow with a history of breeding or flushing problems.
