Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
Just got a catalog on this auction in Argyle, NY. Seems to be a real solid herd of cows with some contracted cows from the Juror Faith cow family as well as some others.
The most intriguing part of the auction to me was the lots of semen that were going to be up for auction.
5 - Goldwyn
16 - Jasper
30 - Stormatic
10 - Outside
10 - James
15 - Kite
15 - Adrenaline
some others that aren't quite as scarce but i cant remember off the top of my head.
I guess if your in desperate need of some Goldwyn and can't wait for your shipment to come in this might be the place to pick it up. Any thoughts...

not that i know of. The auction is being done by Dave Rama and the cattle exchange. November 24th. I tried looking for more information on about the cows and farm online but didn't have much luck so I called Mrs. Rama and had her mail me a sale book.

Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
I know i know, I am interested in some of the semen lots as well and thought about keeping everything on the down low in order to pick up something on the cheap. But I heard Alan was a swell guy and I suppose anytime there is a sale with something that is worth something it is a good idea to get the word out so the seller can get close to market value. I'd want people to do the same whenever it comes time for me to pack things up and sell.
Besides I thought i heard some COWTALKERs in need of some Goldwyn and Jasper semen so I figured i would let them know were to find some. But, I never said I wouldn't be bidding against them on some of the lots.

Re: Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
I have never heard of this farm. Has I just missed the advertising? Is it a good herd? SUre used some good bulls. I am afraid with the dropping milk prices, we will see a lot of farms selling out. Sure hope most guys can hang on and make it through this winter.

He really hasn't advertised to my knowledge. He has bought into some good pedigrees, from my understanding he is an ayrshire guy (has some outstanding Ayrshires). He started up a couple years back, did some improvements on the barn. I beleive redid the interior, built a new milk house, added ventilation, and the like. Its a shame he is going out, but its been a result of help, and the economy. I know this, as a buddy of mine was taking care of some of the heifers. The help part has been more of a reliability issue (isn't that the case most of the time anyways). Either way, should be interesting. Weather looks kinda clamy, but the storm might hold off till late (hopefully). Supposed to be in the 30's. I hope dave brought his salamander..
Also Buze, yes he is a good guy, locally at the fair he was going to give 500 to each grand champion animal per breed. But the fair pulled some bull, and he declined (cant blame him). I never met him, or talked with him.. Also if your going to be there, look me up. Ill likely be wearing a plad shirt, with a brown hat that has a deer on it.. Or maybe ill just don some coveralls. hmmm.

Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
Jeff, I have known of my wife to plan her outfit for a big event days in advance but never a dairyman in anticipation of a sale. i better start looking through my closet...Not sure if you will stand out with a plaid shirt and a brown hat with a deer on it. The outfit sounds eerily similar to what 90% of folks in these parts wear to sales. not quite sure if I will be going yet or not. If I do go i will be wearing a Yankees cap and be sitting near the front row with my dad. If i dont go I will call in my reserve bids. But most likely I will just be window shopping.

Re: Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
Well it was a good sale, some animals went for less than they should have, and semen seemed to go for the right price. The semen toper was Goldwyn, which I think went for 460 a unit, there were 6 units. The buyer was Cowtown (my guess is a flush for Liberty). Wouldn't that make a nice heifer? A goldwyn out of the roxys.
The sale topper, atleast before we left was 7200 or so, a September Storm. Nice cow. A real nice Advent sold for 6100 or so. She had a real deep body, nice square rump, good leg, good rib. If I didn't have my mind on a bedding chopper if sawdust gets tight, I would have bid on her. Dam was 93, 2nd dam was 94..
All in all, a nice sale, shame that Mr. Ethier was selling, you could tell he loves his animals. Is a shame when any farm sells out, it simply means more land for development, or something else.
I picked up some semen, nabbed 10 units of Stormatic, and 10 units of Outside. Even though I could have bought the Outside cheaper elsewhere, it was nice to support Alain.

Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
Hey Jeff, I didn't see you there. After walking around the barn and checking the cattle I poked my head around while the machinery was selling and was looking for a plaid shirt and a brown hat. I ws never good at wheres waldo and imagine i would have gotten kicked off the lot had I asked everyone with a brown hat if they were JeffNYC. Sorry for not being too original with my Yankees hat as i saw at least 3 other guys with a Yankees hat on. I was the younger, slimmer, better looking one in case you were wondering which one was me.
Yeah the cattle definately went cheap. Especially the young stock out of the better index cattle. A guy from my area picked up 4 solid indexing heifers from the top animals in the barn for less then $1600 a piece. These were deep pedigreed registered cattle getting sold for grade prices.
The Red heifer Jeff mentioned was a yearling full sister to the 87pt advent artic. her pedigree was one of the deepest as far as type goes at the auction and she brought $6100 on a phone bid. A deal I thought was a average Ramos cow due around Christmas time with a embryo implanted from teh same mating. She brought $2200. If luck is on your side and she has a heifer you more then make back your money. If she has a bull you still have a Ramos 2nd calver that should last about 7 months longer then your average cow.
I thought the semen sold the best.
Goldwyn - $470/unit
Stormatic $300/unit
Jasper - $200/unit
Outside - $100/unit
James - $35/unit (i think)
Those were the main ones I remember. I have the prices in my car and am just too lazy to go out and check the rest right now. If I am wrong on any of these feel free to correct me Jeff.
Overall it was a good turnout, but didn't seem like there was a lot of money or just no one had room for tie stall cows in there barns with winter coming.

I just sold 10 units of Stormatic for $150 a unit. Guess I gave someone a good deal.

Re: Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
I'm desperate to find three straws of Stormatic for a flush - I have here the dam of Brookfield Stormatic Passion EX92 -3rd calf, one of the UK's highest classified stormatics.... but I am not sure i could part with $300/£150 per straw as easily as Jeff. At least I purchased my Goldwyn a few weeks ago at £50... phew!!

Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
we bought 6 straws of stormatic 2 months ago from local reseller for $120 ea for 3 flushes. There is a young farmer down the road with a big herd ,big debt and some expensive cow families (ones we thought were good but overpriced)and we are supplying the semen for 1/2 the embryos in each flush.

Ethier Farms Dispersal - scarce semen lots to sell
I think that last two big shows really drove the price of those bulls (Goldwyn and Stormatic) way up. Goldwyns looked great at the shows and the VG 2yr old list is full of Goldwyn daughters in CAN. the past 3 months. Then you have Hazel who looked great and came in reserve. I am sure the potential of the semen from these two bulls is still fresh in everyones minds.
I would have to imagine the prices will drop back down after January proofs come out and the Goldwyn sons with incredible linears start popping up at a fraction of the cost.
If both both Goldwyn and Stormatic sell for $300 I would dare say Shottle is a bargain at $150.

I think with the push for genomics you will see Goldwyn and Shottle sons come out in the next 6months with a "Genomic proof" that will look so good people will forget about paying the $$$ black market price for Goldwyn semen.
