Re: sheep.....

A show sheep should be woolly and white with four legs. The four legs should ,preferably, be facing downwards , not upwards !

Re: sheep.....

I think the white part is important coz you dont want to be the black sheep of the show scene.

Ahhh right, you're in the Ottawa Valley aren't you Mayjay? Where the men are men, the sheep are nervous, and the women are sleeping alone.

Re: sheep.....

My wife has some Grey faced Dartmooor sheep. They are a rare breed which isn't a suprise as they must be the most un practical sheep ever bred. They are so wooly that you even have to clip the lambs in their first season. The society president came up to see them last week and apparently one of the lambs "has a face to die for"
I haven't been able to establish why yet.

It all depends on the breed, much the same as in the cow world - some cows look good, some are just plain ugly, ditto for sheep

Work with Cross-Border Farmer Gps. Still involved in home farm, Inishowen Holsteins & Knock Texels! Herd av. 8, 300kg (its gone up) on grass based diet, av. class. around 82 - 83 pts. Need a good Texel ram talk to me!

Yep, I'd agree with that. emoticon

Much like the cow showing world, it's more to do with politics and who's holding the animal, than the quality of the animal. As with the dairy shows, it should be viewed as an "interesting distraction", far removed from commercial reality.

Good luck in your endeavours. If you want to buy into the breed that is cleaning up in all the Interbreeds this year, let me know. emoticon

Mark, a wise old shepherd once told me that rare breeds were usually rare for a reason. emoticon
