Myself
I, personally, have never been involved in a "cult". I have seen the effects through the net and other sources, but never first hand.
The main reason I am involved in this is because I have a deep anger toward those who twist God's Word for their own benefit.
I saw on TV, a special about david koresh ( I refuse to caiptalize his name) and it led me to investigate through the web. I found a site that had a message board dedicated to the teachings of koresh and his followers. It took time, but with God's will in my life it eventually shut down.
This led to an interest into scientology. Which in my mind is so obscure I don't understand how anyone could believe it. I mean, xenu? Cmon.
After looking there, I went into Mormonism. Now I will agree that they are the nicest people that are going to hell that you can find. After reading and researching them for a while, I do feel sorry for them. They feel they are on the right path. But Salvation is free, just ask for it and it is yours.
So, don't ask me of personall involment because I have none. I am a firm believer in Jesus Christ as Risen Savior and Lord. I believe He taught the 12 and then later taught Paul on the road to Damascus. I will see Him someday, either when I die or when He raptures His bride.

You are very fortunate
You are very fortunate, Dondi. I wish I could say the same thing about myself. But, as I've shared before, I think I've nearly run the gamut of false religions and other abusive groups (including abusive relationships inside, and outside of, my family). I'll say more about the different aspects of my spiritual journey in appropriate forums when I have more time. It's been very painful to go through all of that; and my spiritual, emotional, psychological, social, and financial growth has been severely stunted by my involvement in such groups for so long. But, as badly as I've failed Him, Jesus has always been faithful and has brought me back to Himself, accepting me just as I am and forgiving me completely.
There is one group that I came across recently, The Justice House of Prayer. Have you ever heard of them? Their local Internet address is http://www.jhopsd.com . What do you think of them?

Re: Myself
I asked about the Justice House of Prayer in another group; and the first response was as follows (I will post other responses as I receive them):
"Hi FJRB:
I have never heard of the Justice House of Prayer.
I looked at the link you provided; of the the main
speakers listed at this meeting I only know the first
one: Lou Engle. He has come to my church several
times over the past 10 years and I know a bit about
him. From what I can gather he is a man of great
passion, humility and integrity. He has a deep concern
for America, and has a heart especially for the youth.
He's the type of guy who will fast for weeks and weep
and pray on behalf of the poor and the broken. I
believe he is genuine. I don't know any of the other
speakers.
I personally know the director of an ihop
(international house of prayer) in Canada, and again
she is someone of integrity, who has given her time
and resources to serve God in the way she feels
called.
I also have met the guy who started ihop, Mike Bickle
and again I feel that he is the real deal and not a
cult leader or in it for the power or to manipulate
others.
Yeah, Justice House of Prayer seems awfully crazy and
radical, and for those of us coming from a cult
background that should raise a warning flag to be
careful and use caution, do some research, investigate
- don't jump in with your eyes closed.
On the other hand extreme is not always a bad thing. I
met a woman who many people think is too extreme. Her
name is Heidi Baker, she is from Laguna Beach, California. She is crazy for God. All she thinks
about is loving God and loving people. She weeps for
the poor and lays on the floor and cries out for more
of God. Many people tell her she is nuts and has lost
her balance. She moved to Mozambique with her husband
Roland 10 years ago because it was the poorest country
in the world and she wanted to help them. They
started a little church beside a garbage dump near
Maputo where they would rescue dying children who
lived in the dump. They went into the streets and
dumps and brought the poor, the prostitutes, the sick
and the dying to their little orphanage. Their church
was an old tent where they kneel and pray on the dirt
floor. Quite often they didn't eat for days.
Today they have a Ministry called Iris Ministries,
they have started over 6,000 churches and orphanages
in south east africa, they continue to rescue poor
and dying children. Some people still think she's too
extreme. I wish I had more of what she has.

Re: Myself
I would be weary of this group. I've seen their name on another board and talk wasn't nice about them. From what I read on their values page. They seem a little out there. They like communal living, they believe in modern day prophets, they voluntarily refuse the pleasures of this world; which in a sense is good, but who doesn't like hot water and electricity?
To me, now this is my thinking, I do not see much difference in these people than some of the other cults out there. When you take away everyday stuff from people you are slowly breaking them down to conform to your will. If I take away soap from you for a long enough time, after awhile you won't notice the smell or even realize that you have an odor at all. Like I tell people, you feed a person a dog turd long enough, they develop a taste for dog turds. Kind of a crude anology but I think it fits here.
They are using cult like behavior in their thinking and acting from what I read. They say they are about prayer, but if you subject your body to too much fasting, prayer and meditation you are more than likely to have a satanic attack and not realize it. That is why Yoga is considered a cult.
With that said, talk to God about this before even giving them your e mail address. If you are looking to find a church home, don't look on the net. Try each one out and God will let you know when your in the right House.
