Interesting...The name of God
Posted: 12 Sep 2006 06:58 am by FJRB Post subject: Interesting . . . The Name of God
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently made a post to a "Jews for Judaism" site, requesting information on literature for the purpose of educating myself and the public about the cult phenomenon. In signing my post, I said, "YHVH bless you," thinking that that would be perfectly alright (it's OK to write "YHVH" but not to say it). But I was wrong. Though we in the West tend to see YHVH as an abbreviation which cannot be pronounced as is (we need to say "Yahweh"), Orthodox Jews view even the writing of it as sacrilige. I learned that, when speaking about God, it is appropriate to say, "HaShem," which means:
"HaShem" - (both and neither masculine nor feminine and absolutely no plural); the word means, literally, "The Name," and it is the way that Jews refer to G-d when not in a Prayer or Torah Reading or Torah citation context. The reason is that the Torah forbids us from pronouncing the four-letter Name of HaShem in other than ritual contexts, and even then using only certain Names (other than the four-letter one, known as the Tetragrammaton) that embody characteristics, such as A-donai, E-l, E-lohim.

I thought it would be interesting to show the difference between what persons well-educated in the Hebrew language say and what members of one of the groups in this discussion say.
I don't have time to say anymore here and now; but maybe I can say more later.
HaShem bless all of you,
FJRB
