Welcome!

The Graduate Student Center and Graduate Student Association Council (GSAC) welcome you to the Students with Dependents message board. Here you can find a community of other graduate students in various stages of the dissertation process.

Please take the time to create a new post introducing yourself and your program so that the message board begins to populate itself.

Also include any questions or comments that you may have about your experiences navigating graduate life as a parent.

Thanks!

**Why do you have to register for this board?
Our websites have recently been flooded with "bots" that fill online forms and boards with spam. Until we can find a fix, we ask that you please bear with us with a registration-required board. Thanks!

Re: Welcome!

Hello,

My name is Mary, my husband is a student at Wharton. We come from Uganda in East Africa and are enjoying the Philly experience.
I'm really excited about this board and I'm sure you can provide some information regarding volunteer work and classes that are available to spouses.

Hi-

My name is Jennifer Mosher. I am a first year graduate student in the Physics department. My husband Michael just started a post-doc at the UPenn hospital this summer, and we have a 1 year old son. I am excited to be in touch with other grad students with families!

Re: Welcome!

It doesn't look like anyone has really been using this message board lately. My husband and I are both writing dissertations in French lit and are expecting a baby in May 2007. We're hoping to meet other grad students who are expecting or who already have kids.

I am happy to get together with you. I have been disappointed not to meet any other grad school parents so far. If you ever want to have a chat over coffee somewhere, I am game! My email is jmosher@sas

Re: Welcome!

Hi, I'm a 26 year old entering Penn as a grad student this Fall (2007) in the criminology program. I'll be commuting from Delaware. I'd love to meet some other grad students who are also moms. I have two young children (ages 17 months and 6 years).

Hope to hear from some of you!

Joanna

Hi, I'm a 5th-year student in Linguistics, and we're expecting a baby in December. Currently I'm most interested in knowing about health insurance... it seems complicated. Anybody using PSIP for their kids?

Tatjana.

Re: Welcome!

hi. my name is rachel, i'll be a visiting student at the law school, and i have a child who is about to turn 1. we live in west philly and are frequently found at the clark park playground on 43rd and chester...it's a nice place to meet lots of area parents. as for health insurance, we use CHIP for our son. in PA, all kids are covered by the state, and rates are based on parents' incomes. we just started using it and haven't encountered any problems yet.
ok, take care, i hope to see some of you on campus one day.

Re: CHIP

yeah but international students can NOT get into CHIP. I've been told by OIP that receiving any benefits from US or state goverment seriously jeopardizes a non-immigrant (eg. student) visa status.
