posticon Anybody out there?

I was aware of the Penn Students with Dependents group at the Grad Student Center for over a year, but until now wasn't aware that there is also a message board. I imagine I'm not the only one!

Anyway, I'm Denise, I'm working on my MSN in the Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. I started out full time, but we decided not to wait any longer to start our family, so now we have a wonderful 1.5 year old. Because I want to be a part of his life as much as possible, I've dropped to one class/semester and I only work at the hospital on weekends now.

It's been a struggle to cobble together child care! I think that's been the hardest part about being a student and a parent. It's probably made worse because I want to keep my skills up by working part time, and RNs work odd shifts--e.g. maybe I can find someone to watch DS in the evening, but there's no one to pick him up from day care--stuff like that. My husband certainly helps, but he's an academic too, so his "plate" is generally overflowing too, even on evenings and weekends.

Wow, soooo glad we have insurance through my husband because the health insurance thing would be such a headache. I hope you internationals were able to find some good advice! Sorry we have such a screwed-up health insurance system in this country. ;-(
