Greek Mythology

My mom and I just rented Troy and I absolutly loved it. But then again I have always loved myhtology. Do you guys think there ever really was a Troy and a Trojan War? I do. There has been cities recovered in Turkey and places around there. What is your fave myhtological character? I want some thoughts!!!!! My favorite character... hmm... I have a lot. I have always liked Penelope, Odysseus's wife, Pegasus, Patroclus, Hippolyta, and there was one other.... oh yeah Atalanta. I liked Athena goddess of love too... but I just got that from watching the TV cartoon show Hercules. So give me some thoughts on this!!

Re: Greek Mythology

I absolutely adore Greek mythology!! The Greeks had serious issues in the field of government and philosophy, but they sure could tell a story.
I was in my element in Italy because most of the Roman myths are stolen from the Greeks. So, I was walking through the art galleries explaining all the stories behind the statues and paintings to my friends. I haven't had that much fun in a looong time. emoticon

I also love Penelope, though I loath Odysseus because he cheated on her. I love the story of Theseus, The Odyssey, The Iliad, the birth of Hermes, and many others. My favorite goddess is Artemis/Diana. I read the story of her turning the hunter into a deer and siccing his own dogs on him for ogling her and she's been my favorite ever since. emoticon
I haven't seen Troy because my brother said it went completely against the mythology. I love the Iliad too much to see a corruption of it.
I think there was definitely a Trojan War. Maybe not for the reasons the mythology says. Certainly there wasn't really an apple of discord fought over by Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena. emoticon

I have no doubt that there was a Troy and the Trojan war took place. Youcan't just create a story like that without some sort of sourse material. Especially if your a blind poet in ancient Greece.

My favorite myth would have to be that of Orion. The one person that could have won the heart of Dianna but was killed "accidentally" by her brother. I love the story of how Dianna took Orion from the sea and spread his body among the stars.

Darn...I don't have any brothers, but they sure sound nifty! Ha ha...

My favorite Greek myth would have to be the Odyssey. I don't know if that story came from a true one or not, but it sure was interesting. Greek mythology was my favorite subject when I was younger. The only thing that really dampened my love for it was the Disney version of Hercules. emoticon

I'm pretty sure the Trojan War really happened...or at least something very similar to it happened. The story may be really puffed up, but legends are usually formed off of truth. Something that makes some legends seem so fascinating is when you can truly believe that they really happened...somehow. emoticon

I have a question. When Paris decides to fight Meneleus doesn't Athena carry Paris off the field and to her palace? That is what I seem to remeber from a book I read. In the movie Hector kills Meneleus. I thought that was a little bit messed up. Wasn't Andromache taken captive by the Greeks? And her baby Astynax was thrown from the walls of Troy by Agamemnon. I cried when I read that! emoticon

The movie tries to find the truth behind the myth so the gods are not involved in what's going on. They are prayed to but that's about it.

Ahhh... Thanks for the info Firebreahter. How smart would I be without you? Not very. emoticon

But that still doesn't answer my question about Andromache and Astynax. I got my info from a really good book called Troy by Adele Geras. I really liked it. Read it! emoticon

Odyesseus did NOT cheat on Penelope! Where did you pick that up? It was Calypso who kept him there against his will, if that's the incident you're refering to.
Yeah, I'm a greek myth fan. No, I do not capitalize those, don't know why. Just never did.
Yeah, there was a Trojan war, there was a Troy at one time, and there really was a Helen, although I doubt it was her face that launched those ships. Paris was just kidnapping her, so her husband did the logical thing and went after her. Although he didn't do it incredibly wisely, since a buncha stuff happened.
Did you know that Nero set a city on fire, then went up on a rooftop singing "Troy is on fire"? Yeah, he did. Deliberately, and mocking history. I don't like that guy at all. Although I don't think we're supposed to like him.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, Elfdragoli, but Oddyseus most definitely did cheat on Penelope with Calypso. It's pretty clear. There's another place where he cheated too, but I can't remember it offhand.

For future reference... contradicting your elders typically isn't wise.
