I never did Chapter three here, did I? Whoops.

Chapter Three

Lisa lifted her necklace from the box. It was not silver or gold but rather a leather cord. She tied it on tightly, and then running her hand down the strap, she fingered the engraved cross.

A whittled wooden cross made by her father for her mother when they were young. Her mother's name and her middle name carved into it. "Marie."

When her mother died....Lisa shut that out. Her dreams had gotten worse. She didn't need death hanging over her birthday like a bird of 'nevermore'.

"Esther?" Lisa quietly called, suddenly not wanting to be alone. Soon she heard footsteps coming.

"Yes, lady?" Esther whispered from the doorway.

"Can you come help me? I'm having trouble. I can't do coronet braids properly." Lisa picked up a brush.

"You WILL be taking them down for the ceremony, won't you? Everything about you was created freely, not tied back. It flows properly, it's texture and thickness, it wasn't meant to be pulled back constantly." Esther tried to coax Lisa into being more feminine constantly.

"You're telling me this, why?" Lisa glanced suspiciously at Esther's reflection.

Esther looked fairly innocent. "I don't know, maybe because you want to look your best and you and I know it?" Both laughed hoplessly.

Chapter Five

Standing at the top of the staircase once more, Lisa's father looked up at her proudly, his only child, image of her parents.

Lisa smiled down at him, sedately descending the stairs, her long blue gown trailing behind her. Her hair cascading down, her eyes sparkling, her gold circlet reflecting the sun, all bespoke royalty, and a beautiful picture.

As she came to the landing where Esther waited, she looked toward the crowd. Lord David was close enough that she could hear him whisper unrehearsedly "Beautiful, like a swan."

Esther stepped up to her, whispering, "Stay away from Donovan tonight. I'll explain later."

Lisa nodded, Esther falling back into place, both acting like nothing unusual had occurred. They went down the few stairs left, stepping gracefully and in rhythm with each other.

As they started to approach the little podium, erected especially for this event, where Lisa's father waited, David took her arm and stepped beside her. Murmers were heard from the crowd.

Esther fell back a little more, unsure. Kevin took command and escorted her up to the waiting Lisa. As the two escorts melted into the crowd, Lisa's father stepped up and began to address the court.

"My people..." He began. He got no farther. He began to look very ill.

"Father!" Lisa hurried to his side.

Re: (untitled yet)

ok, I'm redoing chapters. Now here it's chapter one.

Chapter One
Darkness surrounding a single form. As the shadow materialized, it was a fair honey-blond child calling for her mother.
Frightening noises commenced, sword clashes, yelling and the like while the child still called her mother.
The girl gave one last cry. "Motherrrrr!"
* * * *

Lisa awoke with a start. Realizing it was her own voice that woke her up, she flopped back onto her pillow.
Preparing to go back to sleep, she murmered, "What day is it?" Looking at her calendar sampler, she sat up. "My seventeenth birthday. The day I can officially become a queen." She sank down in her bed and rolled over groaning.
"Nope, must get up!" She said out loud and tried to force herself into a sitting position.
"Your Highness? Are you awake?" A knock and a female voice sounded at the door.
"Yes, you may come in, Esther." As the door opened, Lisa turned to look at it. "MUST I get up this morning?"
"I'm afraid so, Princess Lisa. Your father wanted to go for an early ride before the capitol awakens and the celebrations commence." Esther carried Lisa's leather riding tunic and pants towards the bed.
As Esther lit a candle for Lisa and prepared to leave, Lisa slipped her feet out of the covers into her waiting warm slippers. "Will you be coming with us, Esther?" Lisa hurriedly added, fearful that Esther might argue with her position in the royal home. "You don't have to you know, I thought it might be nice for you though."
Esther smiled. "I might if it's a royal decree. If not, I'll stay and receive the expected bouquets from your numerous suitors,"
Lisa rolled her eyes. "You'd better come. I wouldn't wish that on anybody."
Both the girls giggled as Esther slipped out the door and Lisa got up to dress. As she slipped on her brown leather tunic over her warm undershirt, the smile never left her face.
Still honey-blond, 5'3'', blue eyed pixie child, Lisa had only grown in beauty, grace, height and true character.
Seventeen, of age now for marriage and the crown, she had several serious suitors but more star-struck boys. Her three top suitors were Kevin, Donovan and David. She had attended private school with these three and Esther.
Kevin was incredibly loyal, would die for the lady who captured his affections. All the servants and Lisa knew Kevin's recipient was Esther and vice versa. He was only in this competition (need better word, anybody?) because his father threatened to disinherit him.
Donovan. Proud, vain, predjudiced against poor people. He was courting Lisa for the crown, not for herself. Despising Lisa's faith as a Christian, he laughed, behind her back, all around the country.
Lord David, the last of the three. Raised from a fortune-lost dukedom, to a prominent place amongst the nobles in the King's court. Lisa's father favored him well. He was Lisa's favorite, being of the same faith as her, Esther and Kevin, and being her next best friend to her father and the other two. Still thinking about David and smiling, Lisa moved towards the mirror where she picked up a small box.
"I'm going to go get Peace and Grace prepared for our ride." Esther slid out the door, Lisa following a few minutes later.
Glancing around, Lisa didn't see anyone as she stood at the top of the stairway. Polished marble railing and stairs, soon to be draped with a red carpet, spread before her.
Lisa sighed. "What's the point of being almost grownup if you can't have fun?" she mumbled to herself. Looking around once more, not seeing another person, she slid one leg over the bannister and rode to the bottom.
Landing in the foyer, she tiptoed to the kitchen. Grabbing a freashly baked loaf, she put that and some chees and a thermos of orange juice into a knapsackk.
As soon as she was by the stables she began to relax. It's so hard being quiet at 6 am in the spring when you have roses and lilies blooming just outside your windows.
"Princess Lisa!" a loud whisper carried across the stable yard. Lisa turned. Esther was coming, leading Lisa's personal horse and her own.
Lisa hadn't forgotten to tuck several sugar cubes in her pocket for her special love. "Here. I'll take Peace now. Feed these to Grace. Tell her I got them especially for her." Lisa handed a few cubes to Esther.
Esther's horse was "Twilight's Grace", twin to Lisa's "Twilight's Peace". Both Arabians, pedigreed, and personally trained by Esther and Lisa. King Frank (Lisa's father) owned "Twilight's Descent" the older brother of the aforementioned.
Esther and Lisa came to the block. Lisa tied her knapsack onto her saddle. "Are we ready to ride, your Highness?" Esther unnecessarily asked.
Lisa grinned at Esther as both of them were seated properly. "Well, let's see. Peace and Grace are ready to ride, we're in proper riding gear, I'd say let's go."
Tapping their horses into a trot, they moved off to the forest to meet the King for their ride.

Chapter Two
Standing at the top of the staircase once more, Lisa's father looked up at her proudly, his only child, image of her parents.
She was too late. The King's knees buckled, his face going pale. He grasped for something to hold on to and finding nothing, he fell.
"Stand aside!" The court physician called, as charters came through and laid him on a small litter. They carried him out, the doctor following next to it, trying to find a pulse.
Lisa fell to her knees, praying, hoping, trying to keep death from the door. David, Esther, Kevin, and then the entire court followed her lead. Even the nonChristians took her example.
Momentarily, the physician returned. He whispered in Lisa's ear, as she shook her head, telling him without words she had not the strength to tell.
The court doctor held up his hands for attention. "King Frank of Mederin and the Highlands has died." He exited sorrowfully, speaking quietly with the steward for a moment.
Gracchio, the steward entered the canopied podium and spoke. "Before the wailing begins, it was told to me that the King's last word was 'celebrate.' An hour of silence will be observed this afternoon, shortly before the planned feast." Turning to Lisa, he spoke gently. "Tomorrow will begin the time of mourning. Today we need to see smiles, alright? Show us you are the brave princess your father raised." Speaking to the court again, he announced, "Princess Lisa's coronation will be in a week. But as today is her seventeenth birthday, we shall focus on that and give her a rousing birthday cheer. Better Birthday, Princess!"
The court joined him in the wishing as Lisa rose from her knees and smiled with a curtsy. "That's my girl." She heard David whisper as she stood straight.
Later that night, Esther sat with Lisa in her chamber, crying and talking. Both letting the tears flow that tomorrow they could be stronger.
After awhile, Lisa said thoughtfully, "My mother was a Christian. So is —was—my father. The Book says that people who believe in Jesus will go to heaven, right? My mother and father, they're with the people they told me about, Mary, Moses, Joseph, Esther." Lisa smiled at that last one through her tears.
"That's correct, Princess, although I seem to be pretty alive, don't I?" Esther teased her a little, trying to get her to smile again.
"I don't know. I wish father hadn't died. I'm not ready to be a queen, much less one with no relatives." Lisa sniffled a little.
"I had your father as a pretend uncle. That would make us cousins, wouldn't it?" Esther hugged Lisa.
"Yes, but our birthdays are only a few hours apart, aren't they? You can be my twin. They're usually more comforting that cousins or regular siblings." Lisa hugged her back.
"Twins to the end then?" asked Esther shyly.
"Twins to the end. Happy Birthday, sis." Lisa repeated resolutely.

Chapter Three
The next day, Lisa instinctively reached for her white 'uniform.' But
no, black. The ones she never wore. The ones she looked worst in. She
tried hard never to wear any absence of color, except for occasionally
white. She absolutely despised black. It was her enemy, darkness.
Sighing as she put on proper attire for mourning, she scowled at her
reflection, hating every inch of that cloth. After brushing her hair,
she put it in a black net with her regular gold circlet. That crown held
her prisoner to propriety, she always thought. Chains, holding her in
darkness and pitch black hopelessness it seemed now.
Sedately walking down to breakfast, she looked longingly at the
banister that she had slid down the morning before, before she was an
orphan, before her father had left her prisoner to her kingdom. Slowly
descending into the foyer and then heading down the hallway, she sighed
again.
Turning into the dining room, informal one, the one she sat with her
friends and family at during meals when there was no feast or guests,
she looked at the table. It looked so lonely to her. The table was
unset, which was odd at the time of day.
"Esther?" Lisa's voice reverberated in the empty dining room. Lisa
sighed after a moment and hung her head. It was apparent to her Esther
was not coming.
Suddenly in the doorway in front of her appeared David, Esther and
Kevin. Silence reigned, leaving Lisa as a girl, not ruler of the
situation, until Kevin sniffed the air appreciatively. "Bacon, eggs and
griddlecakes. Can I have fourths?"
Lisa laughed aloud. Good old Kevin always had a remark ready for silent
times. "Not until everybody else has had sixteenths. Your firsts are
usually four times as big as ours you know." Turning to the other
laughing two, she asked, "Should we make him wait to have his until
after we've eaten, or is it safe for us?"
Kevin turned to David with an injured air. "Lady Lisa can be quite
mean, can't she?"
David nodded. "That black outfit doesn't help her appearance or
attitude. Go up and change, Lisa. You know your father hated to see you
in mourning. Don't you think he'd be ashamed to see you like this when
he was always trying hard to keep you cheerful?"
Esther looked at David with an I-can't-believe-you-just-said-that
raised eyebrow, while Lisa shook her head. "I suppose he's right,
Esther. Papa was always trying to keep me upbeat. I would be shaming his
memory if I kept this up. I'll go up and change, but put a little black
on, just so they don't think I'm disrespectful."
Lisa turned and headed back upstairs, Esther giving a slight glare to
David as she followed her mistress upstairs to help. Silence crowned the
dining room again for a few minutes.
"I suppose she's angry at me?" David glanced at Kevin.
"I wouldn't know. I don't watch her all that much. I'd watch Esther
more. I happen to think she's a little more dangerous." Kevin snickered
a little bit and then sobering as Esther came down the stairs seconds later.
Esther swept past Kevin, speaking directly to David. "Her Royal
Highness wishes to see you in the foyer, Master David. "
David nodded, slowly walking down the hallway. Oh bother. Why did I say
that? How do I make up for that slight? I knew she would take offense.
How do I apologize now? David wondered, penitently entering the foyer,
barely seeing Lisa.
Lisa smiled. "There now do you think my father would be ashamed of me?"
She twirled for her old friend, her gown swirling around her. Her dress
had silver stars embroidered on the blue illusion topcover of her white
silk underlayer.
"I'm sorry I said that." David kept his eyes down on the ground.
Lisa put her hand under his chin and tilted it to face her. "You're not
looking. Would you just see?"
David opened his eyes, taking in Lisa's face. Hair gently framing her
face, a black choker embroidered with a silver star on her neck. "Afraid
I can't take anymore, your Highness. Too pretty."
Lisa frowned slightly. "I'm Lisa. I am not 'Your Highness' and you know
that I dislike it. Now would you get yourself to breakfast. I'm hungry,
and I'm not allowed to go unaccompanied." She took his arm, as offered.
David smiled, trying to not laugh aloud. "You know as well as I do that
you can do anything you like in your own palace, Lisa! But if it makes
you feel better, I will not stand in your way. Lead on, lady."
