I had my appointment this afternoon with the radiation oncologist, the same doctor I had when I had the radiation in 2004 and 2007.
He is not so sure the lesions that showed up on my MRI are "new"; but there's no previous MRI to compare it too. When I was first diagnosed with the bone mets in 2007, I had had a PET/CT scan, no MRI. But looking at the films for the MRI and my last bone scan, he is pretty sure there is some new activity going there, and that possibly the cancer I had the radiation on is growing back.
He has ordered a CT scan, which I will have on Monday, and compare that to the CT scan I had two years ago before he makes a decision of what is the best way to treat it. I will see him again next Thursday.
Another problem, is that some of the area where I am having the pain has previously had radiation, and too much radiation to the bone can weaken it, cause it to break, then I'd need hip replacement surgery. But without radiation, the cancer will weaken the bone and do the same thing. He may be able to do some low dose radiation, but then again he has to see the CT scan results before going any further with that. He also said it's possible I could already have a small fracture in that area.
I thought I was getting so close to having an answer about the cause of my hip pain, and doing something about it. Now it looks like just trying to find the best way to treat it will be a challenge.

Thank you.
My scan is at 4:15p.
Had to be done eating at noon so I don't get nauseous from the dye.

I went to a different hospital than I usually do for the scan, since they had an opening earlier. The technician was really nice! After the scan, he asked if I would like something to drink, they had water, juice, and pop; I asked for water. Then he also brought out a basket of snacks! I picked out a blueberry cereal bar to eat on the way home.

I'm going to be getting 14 treatments of low dose radiation to my left hip joint. There is a risk of necrosis to the joint with radiation, especially since I've had radiation to that area before, but since both my oncologist and the radiation oncologist believe that the cancer is starting to grow back, they believe it's worth the risk. Without radiation, if the cancer continues to spread, the bone will die anyway, so either way, I'd need surgery. I asked if this necrosis were to happen, how soon after radiation is finished would it start, and I was told in 6 months to a year. But I think it's worth trying the radiation too; as nothing else I've tried has relieved the pain, and it's really limited my daily activities. And any type of treatment for cancer has its risks.
First I have to have another CT scan, to help them line up the machine and plan my treatment. I had a few xrays today and they got the machine lined up with the marks I had from my previous radiation. For the next CT scan I'll be in a slightly different position than the one I just had Monday. My doctor wants to angle the radiation instead of doing a straight shot through to get the joint so they can avoid having the radiation go through the bowel. I'll have that scan done on November 3rd, then I should be starting the radiation shortly after that.
