Re: When The New Zones Down
Damn, wont this guy give up?? And at a time when I need the zone.
This is off topic, but I really need some help.
Ive just gone to view a 1989 F plate 325ise - 178000miles but with a lot of history. Its in pretty good condition for a 16-17 year old and it drives really well, nice and smooth, but it does have a problem.
It will rev from idle with no problems at all and is smooth until 6k rpm, but when driving and its under load it wont rev past 4k rpm and it stops with a jolt (only got to 4k rpm in 2nd and 3rd) - its almost like the rev limiter is cutting in. It will rev fine when coasting along in gear with the clutch in.
Im sure Ive seen the problem mentioned on the Zone, but with it being down I cant find out.
Ive heard it could be AFM, dodgy crank speed sensor or even the speed sensor on the diff.
The car was serviced just over a year ago, but has only covered 8k miles since.
Can anyone please help shed some light on what the problem could be.
Cheers
James (jmc330i)

Re: When The New Zones Down
No sign of it being sorted yet then?
Would a subscription allow funds to use to stop this sort of thing, i.e. make the site more secure? Any ideas?

I would look at the dizzy cap and rotor arm on the end on the cam.

Re: When The New Zones Down
Are the HT leads gen BM ones - i replaced mine with aftermarket ones and had very similar problems, turned out the lead on plug 5 had become detached and would not provide a good contact under load/high revs
Put the cruddy old BM ones back on and its been sweet ever since
Worth a look

Re: When The New Zones Down
A couple people have said dizzy cap and rotor arm, but wouldnt that cause it to run rough anyway? Its smooth right up to 4k.
The leads look fairly new, but Im not sure if they are gen BMW ones or not.
Do you guys reckon its an easy enough fix, or could it be something more serious. I do have my complete 325i sport engine in the garage, so swapping bits round wont be a problem.
The car is up for £850 (its at a dealer), so Im thinking of offering the guy £350-£400 and telling him I will sort the problem out myself, plus the little bubbles of rust on one rear arch.
