Oil Usage M20

Hi,

Just after fitting a new rebuilt 2,7 M20 but it uses about a litre of oil every 1000km. Previous engine was a 2.5 with 144k & never used a drop. Definately no leaks so just wondering what could be the problem or was the engine badly built?

If you can't see any obvious drip's or runn's any where, and there is no smoke out the back. then could be leakingin to the gear box bell houseing.

Do a gasket test before anything else though.

if its leaking into the gearbox take the cover off the forms part of the mounting point for the gearbox it had 4 13mm head bolts facing the tarmac and about 4 star headed bolts going through the gearbox

Thanks for replies lads. What do yo mean by a gasket test? Also, what would cause the oil to leak into the bellhousing?

the cause of oil going into the bell housing would be a poor fitted gasket on the sump

Confident that it is run in properly, crap oil, etc. There is no oil visable anywhere, if its leaking to the bellhousing would it be dripping from there?

if it was leaking into the bell housing it would drip out the slot at the bottom (unless its blocked)but then the clutch would be affected,
a litre of oil every 1000k is a quite a lot,
i only suspect its burning it but you say it doesnt smoke,
does it run how it should?

if its been rebuilt its less likely to be the crank oil seal you cant really install that wrong.
