ive got an m44 engine that had a prblem with the idle like you have. found out it was a broken breather hose

ok checked around, now il be honest im not realy sure where to be looking, but i had a poke around and found nothing, turned on the engine and again had a poke around coudnt find anything and coudnt hear anything, does anyone have any more ideas or could anyone else be more specific as to where the breather pipe is? need to get myself a haynes..

Don't waste your money on a Haynes, they're crap. Get a Bentley.

Go and buy yourself a tin of brake cleaner and spray it around all the air pipes and manifold joints.

If there is a leak it will get drawn into the engine where it burns very nicely and will make a noticeable differance to the engine note, if the revs rise a little then you can very effectivly 'zero in' on the leak, if not it evaporates harmlessly... unless your daft enough to get a nose full of it emoticon


On my old escort it found a perforated EGR valve diaphram.. that got blanked off and is totally irrelivent to any E30, but imagine how much pratting about it would have taken to find that without the brake cleaner getting sucked in emoticon

In relation to the manual queries, it might be worth getting an E36 manual to cover the M42 bits, as the iS was a bit of a testbed before the M42 was used in other E36 derived cars.

cant find anything on google or haynes, anyone got a pic of where to look for a breather pipe? whats it connected to? again i apologise for the noviceness
