Not sure where our 1st thread dissapeared to so I'll start another one.

Any oil related questions, feel free to ask.

Cheers

1990 318iS - 185k, 2 heads and 3 engine rebuilds in it's long history...

Rattly tappet on start-up but goes after the oil has found it's way round.

I currently have 10/40 in because it's a little thinner, allowing the oil to get to the tappets earlier.

Is this the right thing to do (apart from taking the head to bits!)

Cheers...

Giles.

Giles,

The 10w-40 you are using is a semi synthetic, to get the oil round your engine quicker on start up try a 5w-40 full synthetic, BMW recomend this for all year round use.

We have some good ones available, e-mail me for prices.

Cheers

Hmmm, not sure what happened to the original thread. There was a lot of good info in there.

I have made this one sticky.

Ian.

With having such thin oil, and the car having done starship mileage, won't this damamge the engine...? I thought that for older cars, it was wise to put in a thicker oil to cling to the parts of the engine...

I'm only using the car for track days, so apart from an obligatory warm up session, the car will be driven hard for one day, then stored for a month or so, and so on...

Giles,

For everyday road use the 5w-40 would be fine, however now I know this is a track car things are a little different, being on a track it be driven hard, this means the protection on the other end of the scale (when hot) is the key. I would recomend the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 for this kind of use.

Feel free to e-mail me for some prices.

Cheers

Guy.

1989 325i Sport with 100k, has had head rebuild and it runs very well. It is used everyday.

I'm soon going to do a oil & filter change, in your opinion what is the best possible oil for it?

Cheers for your advice.

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

How much oil usage is normal for a 318iS engine with 240,000 Km (~150,000 Miles) on the clock? I had been using Mobil-1 fully synthetic 5-40W up untill recently and would really use up almost 5 litres of oil per 5000Km... I've been told that 1lt/1000Km is normal for these BMW engines, especially if driven hard (which mine does often). But having changed recently to AVIN 5-40W fully synthetic it seems to be using less. Almost half the amount.

So, are different oils, although they have the same specs, different at how thin they are? And which really is a good synthetic oil to use on such an engine without risking damage, maintaining a good clean engine but also at the same time reducing the amount of oil burned??

Cheers
