How much oil usage is normal for a 318iS engine with 240,000 Km (~150,000 Miles) on the clock? I had been using Mobil-1 fully synthetic 5-40W up untill recently and would really use up almost 5 litres of oil per 5000Km... I've been told that 1lt/1000Km is normal for these BMW engines, especially if driven hard (which mine does often). But having changed recently to AVIN 5-40W fully synthetic it seems to be using less. Almost half the amount.

So, are different oils, although they have the same specs, different at how thin they are? And which really is a good synthetic oil to use on such an engine without risking damage, maintaining a good clean engine but also at the same time reducing the amount of oil burned??

Cheers

I think you'll find the Mobil 1 is 0w-40 and this may explain it. You will use less with a 5w-40 than you will with a 0w-40.

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

Hello,

E30 M3 goes nice with the Mobil 1 that I use now on it (5W50) but do you think that be a good idea chqnge to castrol 10W60? Some people says that this is the best but I think that is enough to this car with the 5W50.

Thanks;

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

Well, the recommendation is for 0w-30, 0w-40 or 5w-40 so you're not far off spec. I would still use a 5w-40 though.

You'll find specs on a few here:

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

OK. I understand change to 0Wxx (best protected in cold ranges) but what's the difference between a xW40 and xW50? is the engine best protected with the second choice or not? is a difference of viscosity the problem?
Thanks.

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

Ok, here goes!

0w and 5w

To meet 0w, oils need to pour at -35 degC
To meet 5w, oils need to pour at -30 degC

sae 40 and sae 50

SAE 50 is thicker at temperature than SAE 40 which will should give higher temperature
protection however...........

There is a problem with wide viscosity oils like 5w-50 or 10w-60 and that is they require more Viscosity Improvers (polymers that uncoil with temperature) to allow them to be thin at start and thick when hot.

These polymers are their weakness as they are the element of the oil that shears with use and therefore cause the oil to become thinner at temperatures over time.

At the end of the day, a good 5w-40 will outperform a 5w-50 as less VI Improvers are required.

If you're going to use an SAE 50 then 10w-50 or 15w-50 is more "shear stable".

Complicated I know but factual.

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

great!!!
I never read these arguments, I think you're an expert emoticon

I'll try with a 0w40 or 10W50.

Thanks.

Nick,

We don't do Valvoline.

Silkolene, Fuchs, Castrol, Mobil and Total.
