Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

My car is finally sorted and is no longer burning oil so I think it's wise to invest in some decent oil for her. Mine's a bit of an oddball so what do you think Simon?

It's basically a stroked M20 engine with a totally reconditioned bottom end, new rings and shells etc. It's also got a reconditioned head. I've been running it on Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W40 Synthetic (but I'm not sure if this is a true synthetic oil).

I drive the car quite hard but not until the oil has reached operating temperature.

What would you suggest for me and what prices>

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

Oilman,
A couple of questions or three for you and maybe an order or two later on.

Right number 1:
E30 325i with just over 100k on the clock. I'm gonna be track daying it and maybe racing it eventually. The engine has got to come apart anyway for the headgasket so it's gonna be port & polished, new cam etc etc. although I will probably leave the bottom end. What oil do you recommend for it given it's gonna get a trashing?

Number 2:
I also have Lancer Evo 6, after the running in period I have been running it on Amsoil fully synth 10w30 (heard mixed comments on Amsoil, although their tech specs look v.good compared to other top brand oils, could be porky pies I suppose, what do you know of Amsoil?). Amsoil is not so good a value as it was so I was thinking of changing. The recommended spec for the Evo is 10w30 and change interval is 4500 miles (yes indeed!). It also has hydraulic tappets that have a tendency to rattle when cold (it's a common trait). A lot of bods run with Castrol RS 10w60, just wondered of any other recommendations?

Number 3:
I also have a '95 1800cc Mk3 Golf Driver that has 130k on the clock and has a tendency to use oil (or lose it some where that I can't see, certainly not overly smokey, recent MOT emmissions were fine). I heard through the grapevine that the oil seals tend to dry up and it's a good idea to use a decent engine flush as that can help "rejunvenate" the seals and then run with Castrol GTX High Mileage 15w40. Sounds a bit dodgey to me (flushing the crap out would surely make leaks worse?). Any comments?

Cheers and seasons greetings emoticon

Col

P.S. I'll email you for a price list but it's b*ggering about at the mo.

You can do so much better then the Magnatec, it is a multigrade mineral oil, if you want to treat your car consider the Motul 300V 10w-40, this is a full ester/pao synthetic.

Tech specs here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

E-mail me for prices.

Driftlearner,

Ok,

No1,

We would recomend the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 for this, it is a true ester/pao synthetic and is ideal if you plan to track the car, it will be able to take everything you can throw at it.

No2,

For this we recomend the Motul 300V 10w-40 or the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40, both are top pao/ester synthetics and are withig the grade recomended for the car, go and have a look at the Mitsubishi lancer register and you will see all the work we have done with the boys there.

No3,

For this, I would not recomend a flush, it will do more harm then good, you want a good rich semi synthetic for this, somehting like the Fuchs Titan XTR 10w-40, this oil uses top quality ingredients and is well worth the money.

Tech specs on all the oils here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

E-mail me for prices.

Cheers

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

Knocked my sump on big speed bump & it is leaking oil quite quickly.

Would appreciate any info. on how big of a job it is to replace lower oil sump on an M40 engine. Is it a job that can be welded instead of replaced. Do I have any other options for replacing it, other than the dealers?

Any help would be appreciated!

Kevin

Re: Oil Advice and Recommendations here

Wondering if I can get a recommendation too emoticon

My E30 has a 3.5 engine from an E28 M535i. The head was replaced with a reconditioned unit about 4k miles ago but the bottom end is untouched and has done 100k+. Halfords recommends 15w/50 for this engine (although for some reason I think they recommend 10w/40 for the E34 version, despite the engines being identical, AFAIK). I was tempted to use Mobil 1 15w/50 as I use this in my 200sx but it’s £35 for 4.5 litres (and I need 5.8 litres) emoticon so I was thinking of using something cheaper, like Magnatech which is only about £17 for 4.5 litres in Halfrauds. Can you recommend anything else that would be better for a similar price?

Car runs on lpg and is likely to spend a lot of time on the motorway if that makes any difference. emoticon

Cheers emoticon
