Wondering if I can get a recommendation too emoticon

My E30 has a 3.5 engine from an E28 M535i. The head was replaced with a reconditioned unit about 4k miles ago but the bottom end is untouched and has done 100k+. Halfords recommends 15w/50 for this engine (although for some reason I think they recommend 10w/40 for the E34 version, despite the engines being identical, AFAIK). I was tempted to use Mobil 1 15w/50 as I use this in my 200sx but it’s £35 for 4.5 litres (and I need 5.8 litres) emoticon so I was thinking of using something cheaper, like Magnatech which is only about £17 for 4.5 litres in Halfrauds. Can you recommend anything else that would be better for a similar price?

Car runs on lpg and is likely to spend a lot of time on the motorway if that makes any difference. emoticon

Ok,

The recomended grades for the engine are a 10w-40 semi synthetic or a 5w-40 full synthetic, if you want to save on cost then a semi synthetic with regular changes, 6000 miles or so would be fine.

Just like everything semis come in various qualities, pic a good one like the likes of Castrol (not magnatec) Silkolene, Fuchs and Motul all do very good semis at not too much cost.

Tech specs here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

E-mail me for prices.

Cheers

Guy.

Hi Oilman,

I use Castrol RS 10W60 all year round in the Spanish southern climate, with a couple of track days. In my opinion and others its the perfect oil (only negative point, its price).

What do you think about it, and what would you recommend?

Thanks

I personally am not a fan of the Castrol RS 10w-60, for the main reason it is too thick, when hot it is a thick as some gear oil, this takes power from your engine just to pump it around, unless it is recomended for your car I would not use it.

You mention price, yes it is expensive, true synthetic prices which is a lot for a hydrocracked mineral oil that will shear down to a 10w-40 within a few thousand miles or a few hard hours on the track.

For your climate I would go 10w-50 or 15w-50 and go for some real quality like Silkolene, Motul or Redline to name a few.

Cheers

Guy.
