Re: HT subwoofers

It's not really hard at all. Depending on your box building abilities it's as easy as car audio. The difference is in the tuning. HT setups typically tune below 30hz so choosing a sub in that range is a good idea, unless you're just looking to supplement the bass generated from your stereo.

In the past I've used a 15" Mag and currently the 18" Q along with experimenting with a few others along the way. AA made a perfect speciman for HT in the Avalanche. It's a shame they're hard to come by.

Now you could go two ways in powering the sub. Either with a plate amp or leaving it as a passive sub powered by either an external amp or driving it off your receiver(I don't suggest). You have greater flexibility in gain and freq controls using amps specifically designed for a HT sub. Your budget may limit you to a passive design but if you're serious about actually feeling the room shake when watching a movie or listening to your tunes then a powered sub is the way to go. Plate amps can range in price comparable to their wattage. Partsexpress sells a 25w amp for $40 while the 1000w beast I used is $400. I've also used their 500w Bash amp with great results. External amps can really stretch your wallet so it really depends on your cash flow.

Building your own HT sub is not a scary/super expensive thing. If you already have the driver you can put one together for as little as $100. I, on the other hand, spent $400 for my amp, $310 for the Q, and $200 for mdf, carpet, ports, neon kit ect..on top of a weekend's worth of work. Over $900 total and a shop badly in need of tlc. But well worth it! emoticon

Some plate amps give you two options in inputs. One is the sub out signal sent from a receiver and the other is line inputs coming from speaker wires. Unless your tv has a sub out line you'll need a receiver. Even the modest priced ones today have sub pre outs. My plate amp only has line inputs. I also have the ability to send the same sub signal on to another sub if needed from the amp, helpful if you're setting up a very large HT and need more than one sub. Here is a pic of my first plate amp's inputs.

Re: HT subwoofers

I have used many of those ^^^ amps and haven't had a failure yet (knock on mdf). Anyways here are some links to a couple great driver sites that you may or may not have heard of.

http://www.solen.ca/

You can build an exact replica (same exact drivers/horns, copy their box) of this system using us speaker for 1/10 the cost:
