I really liked the iDA-X001 until I found out a couple details about it. First of all, and this is a deal breaker for me, that big round knob in the middle does NOT spin, it only can be twisted left or right. So it is basically a circular toggle switch.

Second, since this deck was designed in partnership with Apple, the only lossless format they made compatible is Apple Lossless. To not include FLAC in there, as many companies will soon be doing, reminds me of Microsoft trying to shove things down your throat. Sure, you can find a few AL recordings on torrents but for the most part you have to buy them on itunes, IF and when the cd(s) you wanted are released that way. Weak.

if it plays everything normal decks play now then why does it matter if it wont play FLAC files? i dont even have FLAC music files

what is a lossless file?

It's not a big deal but it matters to me. Lossless is a way of converting files without using massive compression, so the burned cd will be exactly like the original store-bought. But the file sizes will be much larger, which I don't care about anyway. I have been gathering more and more FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) files to listen to on my computer audio rig, and they sound awesome. So I would just like the option to play these same files in my car. All decks sooner or later will have this capability, all I was saying is that by partnering with Apple, they kind of force you to buy itunes songs to use this very nice feature.

hmm im still kinda tryin to understand this...FLAC files are like cd quality songs? so they sound better then mp3 files? what are the files u download on itunes? i download bittorrents but i stick to mp3 files

but either way im seriously looking into the ida-x001 because of how convenient the ipod compatibility thing should be for me

OK let's say you have a cd and you want to upload it to your computer. You have a few options on how to do this. You can rip it as an mp3, which is a method of compression that makes large files smaller, and in turn "loses" alot of the detail and air of the original recording. Alot of people describe the resulting files as edgy and grainy sounding. This is why mp3 and wma and others are referred to as "lossy" formats.

But if you want to make the cd sound exactly like the original, you can rip it into a "lossless" format like FLAC, WavPac, TTA, Apple etc. Most of the people that rip cd's for torrents use a lossy format, but some don't, and there are many sites that post live FLAC recordings that are among the best I have ever heard. We are talking two mics recorded into a digital recorder and then straight to cd with no effects or mastering added. On a decent home system (or headphones) the difference between the formats is stunning. In a car, not so much with all of the added noise. But if we put all this time into getting the best sound out of our car systems, why not start with the purest signal right from the start?

Lol I have to sit here and think about how to explain some of these things.
Well...mp3's use a compression ratio of 10:1 (ten times less data) and FLAC and other "lossless" formats use under 2:1. The term lossless is aimed more towards the sound quality that results, more than saying that there is literally no loss of data. Because there is, in any format. But, to tell the difference between an original cd and a FLAC rip would take a state of the art reference system.

I think an easy visual way to explain compression is this, and this is not technically correct but it will help you understand...

Let's say a store-bought cd contains the following data

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40

After ripped to mp3 the data would now look like this:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

A FLAC rip would only take away from 36-40, leaving almost all of the data intact. Another thing that helps when trying to comprehend this type of thing is how sampling works in the first place.

A sampling rate of 44k means that every second of music is sampled 44,000 times, put into resulting binary numbers called bits. So if you have 16-bits at 44k that means that there will be 44,000 numbers that look like 0100110011100011 per second, 16 digits (or bits) long. As you can imagine, sampling something this many times reproduces a great amount of very small details of the music, and these details are what is lost when compression is used, causing a sort of grainy sound because the "in between" details are now missing.
