Surround tear

Ok fellas, I recently purchased a 12" Eclipse Ti from someone and was kinda mislead on its' condition. It was made known that it had a small tear on the surround at that it didn't have any effect on performance. I mainly bought it to try an eclipse in HT and also to help out someone in need. Now after I got the sub I was suprised to see a 3" tear in the surround. Yes, 3". It's pretty big fellas. The silicon used to repair the surround has failed and now I'm left with repairing it. I've contacted Scott from Fi to see what he suggested and he offered to send some rubber adhesive out to me free of charge. He's a great guy. Well it never arrived and I e-mailed him again and waiting a response.
So what do you guys think? I have to remove the silicon before I can try the adhesive. With such a long tear do you think the adhesive will work? Do I have to apply it just to the surface or do I have to apply it to the insides of the tear? Is there a surround repair kit out there that has some sort of rubber patch?
This sub has a monsterous surround which means extreme x-max. 3" peak to peak. Am I ultimately gonna need a new surround ? I never bought used and never had to repair a sub. For what I paid for it, I'm gonna fix this baby and use it, any way I can. Thanks for the suggestions. emoticon

Re: Surround tear

Just replace the surround Paul, that is too wide to fix otherwise because the weight of whatever you put on there tends to throw the woofer out of balance. I have repaired dozens of speakers and it isn't that hard, even the very first time. The kit comes with 2 (in case you FUBAR the first one, you can try again) foam surrounds, special glue, and detailed instructions. The "12 Inch Extra Large Roll Angle Attach Surrounds Kit" is $27.95 shipped. You may want to measure the surround width ( I think on that driver it is 2") and then call speakerworks to make sure it is wide enough but in this pic it looks pretty wide:

Re: Surround tear

Awesome! Thanks Brad. I had no idea that was available, and I've been asking around. I'm good with my hands so i'll try it myself. That's all this sub needs and the tear is quite troubling to me. It's one of the reasons I hate buying used. Seems you're always inheriting someone else's problem. emoticon
