Replacing a surround

So I bought a 12" Eclipse TI sub with a known tear in the surround. It was made clear that there was a small tear that didn't affect performance. I mainly bought it to help the guy out and try an Eclipse sub for HT. After receiving it I was dissapointed in seeing a 3" tear.

So deciding it was getting fixed one way or another and after getting pointed in the right direction I ordered a surround replacement kit from www.speakerworks.net.

For $24 you get a pair of surrounds, adhesive, brushes and instructions. Somehow I ordered two kits but will use those surrounds on other speakers so all is good. Kit arrived after a couple of days.

First order of business was to remove the old surround. Cutting into the surround kinda felt like breaking the law. Had to be done.

Image[/img]

Next was to remove the remainder of the surround material from the basket. Tool of choice? My own hands. With patience it rolls off with some elbow grease. I just didn't want to scratch the frame with sharp tools. Finished it up with some Goof off.

Next was getting the surround material off the cone. Titanium cone = easier job. Same method, rolled off with my hands and cleaned it up with Goof off. Paper/plastic cones require extra time so as not to damage them. I was lucky.

Now we dry fit the new surround to check proper fit. My replacement seemed to be made for this sub so no trimming was required at all. Perfect fit.

Now I had to prop the cone up to get it ready to accept the new surround. Two aluminium bars worked nice.

Now I apply the glue to both surround and cone with the supplied brush.

Image[/img]

After applying the surround to the cone and assuring the holes in the surround match up with the holes in the basket I had to apply even pressure to the glued joint. I found an old masonry blade I had that was the perfect size and applied pressure with some paper weights overnight.

Image[/img]

Now the surround is securely glued to the cone it's time to glue the surround to the basket. It's very important this is centered or you'll have the cone fighting the surround and possibly causing the VC to rub. Not good. Applied glue to both surround and basket.

Image[/img]

Setting the surround onto the basket. How was I going to apply even pressure to the surround? Rigged up an extension cord and many clamps.

Image[/img]

I let this sit overnight as well. All that's left is to replace the rubber gasket and viola. Surround repair made simple. I even have a spare surround just in case I need it. With just some patience and fair handed skills you can save yourself alot of money.

What's really a shame is that I haven't had time to build a box to try her out in yet. All dressed up and nowhere to go. emoticon
