The Stars Look Down
This topic is for discussing his performance as Joe Gowlan in Carol Reed's adaptation of the A. J. Cronin novel The Stars Look Down, as well as other aspects of the film.

"He must have been fun." --Emlyn Williams (liner notes from "Emlyn Williams as Dylan Thomas in 'A Boy Growing Up'")

Re: The Stars Look Down
This is a wonderful movie. It is also a thorough representation of how well Emlyn played a character that was appearing to those around him as being extremely sweet, while doing evil.
Unfortunately, there will probably be plenty of occassions appropriate for this movie to be aired/presented, with its main topic being the danger of mining.
I am thinking of loaning the movie to one of my friends who just went through a bad break up, as a reminder to be careful of the females he chooses. The main female character in this movie definately deserved worse than she got. The actress who played her helped make the movie very entertaining, and is very pretty.
Unfortunately, whoever wrote it didn't fit Joe Gowlan into the very end of the movie, which I think they should have done.

Re: The Stars Look Down
You know, I always think of this movie whenever I hear of a mine collapse for the claustrophobic miner's eye view of what it must be like to be trapped down there ... just horrifying. But stop me before I go all political here ...
I know what you mean about the character of Joe Gowlan disappearing so early in the film. However, I know exactly where he went: He changed his name to "Dennis" and headed for the Scottish town of Levensford in Hatter's Castle. Have you seen it? He plays almost the exact same character, which is interesting because Dennis isn't really a villain in the original novel, leaving me with the impression that the film's producers saw him in The Stars Look Down and thought he did such a perfect job, they they rewrote HC just so he could reprise the role!
Hmm, I hadn't really thought that the female character was all that bad, but I'lI guess I'll have to watch it again. To me, she seemed more like a victim of Gowlan's manipulations than a bad person herself. Now, the conniving wife of the mine owner was another story!

Re: The Stars Look Down
I figured I'd get on here and mention that I have the soundtrack from this movie stuck in my head (the upbeat part right now).
For the ending...do you think Jenny (Margaret Lockwood) ran off with Joe (Emlyn), back to her mom's, or just some random unknown place?

I had to watch it again to remind myself. Yeah, it is kind of a haunting soundtrack!
I think Jenny probably went back to her mom's. Even if she wanted to go with Joe, he's long gone ... He's changed his name to Dennis and gone off to Levenford to play his womanizing dirty tricks there, in Hatter's Castle! (He plays almost the same character in that movie! And they're both based on books by the same author. But I hear Dennis was a lot different in the book. It's like the makers of HC liked him so much in Stars that they had him reprise the character.)
