That certain something

A 1947 Picturegoer article said of him: "The spell he exerts on a theatre audience has to be experienced to be believed. Even to a masculine eye he seems to have more personal magnetism than the Messrs. Granger, Mason, Gable and Power combined."

What else is there about Emlyn Williams (besides his obvious professional talents) that draws you to him?

"He must have been fun." --Emlyn Williams (liner notes from "Emlyn Williams as Dylan Thomas in 'A Boy Growing Up'")

I've only seen a couple of his films (Major Barbara and Jamaica Inn) but I get a sense of him as being quite playful and intelligent. I'm intrigued enough to try to check out a book on his life later (after the school term is over!)

The quote "He must have been fun" seems aptly fitting.

Greetings, newfan67. Glad you're here! If you liked Major Barbara and Jamaica Inn, you should definitely check out more of his films! And if you like that playful side of him, I recommend Ivanhoe as one that's pretty easy to get a hold of. And as for both playful *and* intelligent ... and to hear the real Emlyn Williams being interviewed, with that ever-so-dry wit of his, along with his totally outrageous performance as Caligula (almost as good as Harry in Jamaica Inn, but Harry just has a special place in my heart), you should see "The Epic That Never Was." You'll find it at the very end (on the last volume) of the "I, Claudius" series of Masterpiece Theatre videos, which are pretty expensive to buy, but you may be able to find it at your local library.
