Anybody know ... ?
I was just reading that, during his Dylan Thomas one-man show, Emlyn Williams sometimes read the poem "Fern Hill"; however it isn't included on the A Boy Growing Up LP he recorded. (Richard Burton performed it on the compilation LP The World of Dylan Thomas in Poetry and Prose with exerpts from Under Milk Wood, which includes three readings by Emlyn, one of which is also on the Boy Growing Up album. His rendition of "A Visit to America" is really funny, BTW, especially his comical imitations of American accents. And oh, God, the razor incident! Ouch!)
So I don't suppose anyone knows if a recording exists of him reading "Fern Hill"? It's one of my favorite poems of all time, and I think to hear Emlyn Williams reading it would be the most sublime experience. I love his voice, and all his "readings" that I've heard are really more performances, with him totally changing his voice "on a dime" for each character ... When I can't sleep, I'll sometimes put on one of his D1ckens albums, and it's like being read a bedtime story; works like a charm most of the time. (Except for that last story on Volume 1, "Mr. Bob Sawyer Gives a Bachelor Party," when he suddenly starts shrieking like a shrill woman, which is more like an alarm clock going off; I had to leave that one off my custom compilation! Also, it's more soothing after you've listened to it at least once all the way through because it's quite entertaining. IMO, he certainly succeeds in his stated goal on the liner notes "of coaxing skeptics to lift down from their shelves a book which they had possibly thought of as a ponderous classic, and to turn its pages for the first time with the feeling that they were about to explore a wonderful new world." A new D1ckens fan has been born ... although I still wish I could hear him read them *all* to me. :-) But that's what imaginations are for, right?)
Another question, does anybody happen to know if any recordings (or films) exist of him actually speaking Welsh? I find it so ironic (although I'm sure we were meant to) that everybody in Last Days of Dolwyn, including Richard Burton and Edith Evans, speaks Welsh except him! (And that, in David Copperfield, his only D1ckensian film role, and again teamed up with Edith Evans, he speaks a grand total of only one line!

Re: Anybody know ... ?
er, I don't have an answer to the above query, but I wanted to thank you (vampyrate?) for uploading those great audio clips- esp. the Dylan Thomas ones as read by our 'friend'. The combination of great writing and Emlyn's voice and sense of timing was a superb little treat.
I am inspired enough to see if I can get the full audio from my library (they do have it- I checked!).
Thanks for the great work.
Cheers!
p.s. I find it kind of funny that you edit Charles D*ckens name for the website sensors. Are they really that picky..? lol

Re: Anybody know ... ?
I'm so glad you enjoyed the audio clips and want to hear more! He's such an awesome reader. I'd like to try to pick out a few more D1ckens samples as well, as he's even *more* lively on those, but the one that's there just happened to be one of my favorite quotes (as someone who also enjoys digging around the graves of deceased or--more accurately--endangered languages)--and I first heard that courtesy of our Emlyn.
As for the censorship ... lol ... That's not my work; it seems to happen automatically. (I probably set the board to filter out profanity, and that's the unfortunate result!) Did you notice that the surname of "Jamaica Inn's" director gets a similar treatment? It's almost like the filter is having the opposite effect to what it's intended for.

Re: Anybody know ... ?
I was just re-reading some of these posts (aw, no new ones; where is everyone?), and I had to laugh at the heavy-handed way the "profanity" filter edits the names of Charles ****ens and Alfred Hitch****--making words that aren't even dirty look like they are. However, have you noticed that those asterisks only appear when you're not logged in? (Or at least they disappear when I log in, as administrator.) So it's hard to even know while you're posting what it's going to take offense to. (I just went back and tried to trick it by re-editing my previous two posts, substituting a "1" for the "i" ... geez, I feel like a spammer now!)
I don't know--do you think I should turn the filter off? (Would you be more likely to post if I did??

Re: Anybody know ... ?
PS: You never said what you thought of the Dylan Thomas recordings. Did you ever get them out of the library? (I've finally picked out another Díckens sample for the website; I just have to find the time to convert it to the proper file and post it.)

Re: Anybody know ... ?
FYI, I've reconfigured the profanity filter, so we can now have uncensored discussions about Alfred Hitch**** and Charles ****ens. *whew*
