Shield Cores

Other then plywood, is there some other core material? I've heard of using sleds and barrel lids, but I'm if-fy on the duribilty of those. (or do they actually last?) I have all this wonderful maxyor foam and can't get plywood, so I'm looking for another option. helpz plz! emoticon

Teck ply tech ply??? Either way we do not core our shields we just use the Maxyor foam. Just add the pvc handle and well ah, they don't usually lose their rigidness for about six months and even then it does not affect their passability.

I usually add 1 layer of blue foam around the side just to make sure. Then add 1 layer of blue on the front, and an additional layer around the hand hole.

I think I will try the blue foam, sounds like it would stop any major breakage and fix the over all look of the foam. Thank you Fairion. emoticon

I also would suggest getting some thin leather or really strong fabric and dapping it to the fron of the sheild under the blue foam just to cover the hand hole.... It will help protect from the hand hole caving in... Does that make sense?

As for barrel lids, I made on out of a plastic lid. It made for a good round shield that was light and made run and gun easy.. buuut the handle pulled through and it did cave in around the edges a little bit.

I also had one out of a snow sled. Made for a decent strap shield, I wouldn't use them to make a punch.
