Rulah vs the Devil ladies

Rulah vs the Devil ladies. Comic from 1948.

Jungle heroine Rulah takes on a mercenary band of vicious female villains disguised as devil women (their costumes differ on the first page to the rest of the story), who have been hired by a "foreign agent". They shoot down lots of natives and use captives to test their "fire guns", until Rulah fixes them.

Like a lot of Rulah villainesses these are very very evil babes alright and meet an appropriate fate-in the case of the lead villainess, a very nasty one.

zippgun!

I opened them all!

GREAT vintage "bad girl" story! I liked best the plunge into the boiling oil... and also the firing squad cut down at the last second by the hidden shooter!

Yes Jimbo-
The creators of the Rulah comic from the 40s liked to features a lot of very ruthless villainesses, many of them coming to sticky ends.

What I especially like here-

-we get lots of villainesses against Rulah, not just one.

-they are totally callous and murderous, shooting down the defenseless natives to terrorize them (enjoying it too) and snaring some for Peter's terrible human "experiment".

-they are mercenaries in Peter's pay (one complains about Peter's holding back the money)-though Peters may be an agent of a hostile "foreign power", the Devil women are in it for the money.

-as Rulah says, they are "yellow" and are no match for her in a fight...only their fire weapons can give them an advantage.

-they all die appropriately; the lead villainess and villain meeting an appropriately ghastly demise which the villains had meant for Rulah, and the other devil women become victims of their own weapons turned against them in the nick of time.

-hot outfits!

So, it pushes all the right buttons for me!emoticon

It DOES, zippgun!

The only way it could be better for me (besides adding some sex/nudity) would be:

The arch villain a FEMALE also.

The bad girls blonde Nazis AND lesbians.

Rulah should be a BLACK native herself.

Put all those together and it would be "a sticky end" for ME!

(make) "the bad girls blonde Nazis AND lesbians."

Dr Wertham would have frothed at the mouth and keeled over with that, Jimbo!

Yes-a black Rulah! Probably difficult in the 40s-I think the artist here was Matt Baker (who also did Phantom Lady), who was himself an African-American (and died way too young).

I usually make my heroines "asian" (and occasionally black) and the villains are trashy "Aryan" blondes (with maybe some bottle blondes in there!). I suppose the latter was born out of all those pulpy blonde gang molls and the gold-digger/airhead cliche; the former reflecting all the asian martial arts heroines.

But don't get the wrong impression-I love cheap Aryan blondes! emoticon

zippgun,

I'd never heard of the artist Matt Baker, but he seems to have a similar background as another noted Black artist, Gene Bilbrew, a.k.a. "Eneg" (Gene spelled backwards) who did a LOT of fetish art for Matrix and many other fetish producers in the 1950s-60s.

While he did do a little work with black characters, his forte seemed to be imperious WHITE women, evil ones, some of whom were even Nazis. One wonders if Eneg had "an axe to grind" regarding white racism in his depiction of cruel white women. emoticon

Jimbo- Cruel white blonde women-I luv 'em! You can imagine why some black artists could feel some hostility at that time.

Another interesting thing strikes me, looking at the crime/hero/horror comics of the period, is how creatively limiting the comics code was-the industry response to stave off legislation in the early 50s. In this comic I doubt you could see anything similar in a modern mainstream comic-with the crowing sadistic mass murdering female gang, a particularly horrifying demise for the lead villains, all the others dying-rather than just being captured....

In other Rulah strips I've seen one villainess burns to death, one gets crushed by a collapsing elephant(!) and 2 are slain by their own evil plants (don't ask!). None of them has a soft spot anywhere either. Totally ruthless.

zippgun!

(Do I have to ask? emoticon )

Could we see some of those other Rulah villainesses' sticky ends?

BTW, yes, I can understand the black artists' outlook. They do acknowledge there are some good white women (the heroines) but also that there were a lot of EVIL white women out there, and (at least in the artists' works) they always met suitably nasty ends at the finish of the stories.
