posticon Moderator's FAQ

Wanting to be a Moderator

Oh so you want to be a moderator, huh? Well, thanks for thinking about helping us. But ask yourself one thing, are you more interested in the board's improvement or having power? Power or the interest of the forum? Which is it? Hehe. I see alot of requests to be moderator. Especially by people who join, then less than 5 minutes after want to be mod. Now, let's get one thing clear. Moderator's need to be people who:

1) Have been on the board for atleast a month
2) Have a good post count(not being spam)
3) Have a good reputation, IE follow the rules well, speak good English so everyone understands, etc.
4) Be polite
5) Doesn't ask to be mod constantly
6) Are willing to help the forum out

So as you can probably guess, a moderator needs to be reasonably intelligent. And to be able to understand the tasks at hand (understanding the guide below).

If you have these qualities, just wait for me to make a new announcement for moderators and volunteer.

Admin posistions won't be given out, I don't need anymore admins and doubt I ever will. Sorry guys!

Being a Moderator

I'm making this guide for newly appointed moderators. Basically, it tells you what you have to do in this role. Treat it like a job.

First things first, once you have moderator status, you'll be able to edit, delete, move, close, hide, sticky all topics in the forum(s) that you moderate. This is done by locating the small drop down menu at the bottom left of the forum.

To check out your moderator control panel, go into your Control Panel >> Board Management >> Security Settings

You'll find how to ban here, in "Manage banned users". And how to resign if you ever wish to.

If a thread does not look like it belongs in the right forum, I.E a topic about bands in a ff forum. Then it needs to be moved to the music forum. That's just one example.

If a thread gets out of hand, people start attacking eachother and being offensive or anything going on that goes against the rules, then the members who do such crimes need to be warned, and the topic closed.

If a member advertises their website on another forum (not the advertising forum), delete the post. UNLESS they have 25 posts or more. Then you move it to the advertising forum. As you need 25+ posts to advertise in the first place.

Only edit posts that you believe need editing, such as someone has double posted a few times. Put the second reply on the first. And you can delete posts that people post twice by accident.

I don't like thread's being deleted, so rather than just being deleted, please move it to the Rubbish Bin if its not important enough to go in the forum you moderate. If the topic goes against the rules however, and believe it definatly needs to be deleted, then go for it. Same for any other messages. I'll trust your judgement.

If a member posts a topic for discussion thats already been posted, don't delete it UNLESS theres more than 1 of that topic on the first page. But only if they have posted something worth not deleting. I don't really mind whether there are more than 1 topic subjects on a forum.

Don't sticky any topics unless you believe they should be stuck at the top of the forum. This basically just stays at the top so its more noticeable. So for example rules, notices, etc should be sticky-ized. emoticon

Banning

Yes, banning. Banning a member from visiting the forum. If you warn a member who is going against the rules and they refuse, you may believe its time for a ban. Depending on the circumstances, you can do so. If they ignore the warning (as in just don't answer) you can ban their username. If they come back as another username (check their IP, its by the stats. Note: Only Admins and Mods see IP addresses). Then you can IP ban them, by copying the IP address and going into your "Manage Banned Users" option in the Control Panel. Be careful with banning. You can contact me to do it for you if your unsure of what your doing. You must always contact me however if you believe a member needs banning. Just send me a PM to my inbox and I'll give the go ahead. If I'm not online and the member is banning excessively, you should ban them even without my consent and then delete their posts that go against the rules.

Resigning

If your a global or forum mod, and you want to quit. No sweat. Just contact me and I'll take away your powers. Or you could do it yourself in your Control Panel >> Board Managment >> Resign. It would be a shame losing you though.

If your going to be away for a short while, don't worry. I won't take away your mod-ship powers, just contact me to let me know. It won't be a problem.

Well, thats pretty much all I can think of at the moment. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
