posticon Hello

Hi Missy--

I sort of stumbled on your website doing some late-night research. I am just starting a weightloss plan and am finding that I have a lot of questions. I saw your "before and afters" and I must congratulate you. It is not easy so I really have to give it up to you and your boyfriend.

What was the most difficult part for you during this whole process? I can imagine the first few weeks were especially hard.

Also, now that you have lost the majority of your weight, are you experiencing other problems like loose skin or stretch marks? I am a little concerned about this. I am thinking that because I am fairly tall and long and am one of those people that hides their weight pretty well, I might not have it too bad. I'm only 25 so I am worried about losing too much and having saggy bags all over the place...lol. I'd like to lose about 50-70lbs depending on how I look--I'm 5'10 so I don't want to look gaunt either.

At any rate, whatever advice you can offer would be really appreciated. Take care and keep up the good work!!!

Re: Hello

My biggest obstacle was changing my attitude. When I was at my heaviest and working with my trainer, I would always give up on myself and say that I couldn't do it. One day I just decided to take his word for it and I tried to do it without giving up...and you know what? I could do it. It was hard, especially when he'd make me lift the weight "just one more time" especially since I felt like I couldn't bear the pain any longer. Realizing that I could do it...and not dying (haha) was the day my life changed. Lifting the weight one more time was not going to kill me, doing one more lunge wasn't going to kill me. It would tire me out and my muscles would be sore...but I'd still live. In my opinion, attitude is what makes or breaks you in weight loss. It's the key to everything. I changed my attitude and started to challenge myself. Inside I'd tell myself that I could get 10 more lunges. I wanted to impress, I wanted to do it.

As far as saggy skin and stretch marks...I have both. At one point my stretch marks on my stomach were very noticable, big and red. I really was self-concious, but I wasn't really at a point where anyone would see my stomach except my boyfriend and I. Stretch marks fade over time. I had them bad on my arms (bicep) area as well. Most of them are white and you can't notice they are there unless you are looking for them. You can buy creams with Vitamin E, glycerine and cocoa butter that can help minimize the appearance of stretch marks. Another thing that helps is to drink TONS of water. It helps your skin's elasticity and help it to snap back better. I think of my stretch marks as my battle wounds...I am proud of them because in a way they remind me of where I've been and what I have done to get where I am. They are constant reminders of all that I have achieved.

I do have minor problems with saggy skin, around my stomach and arms. It's not as bad as other pictures you may have seen of some people. You know what will help prevent saggy skin as well? Water, losing weight slowly which allows your skin to snap back better. If you lose weight quickly, your skin doesn't have time to catch up with you...the slower, the less noticable it will be because your skin will change along with your progress. Another thing that will help is to weight train. Using weights will fill that empty space with muscle. It will fill out the skin where your fat used to be and make saggy skin less of a problem. I lifted pretty heavy when I was working with my trainer and put on a lot of muscle and I think that's why I don't have a lot of saggy skin.

People who just do cardio will be burning fat, but not putting on any muscle...so they have a higher risk for experiencing problems with saggy skin.

I hope that some of this has helped you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.
