Life with a Personal Trainer
Life With a Personal Trainer
By Missy Wagner
I don’t even know where to begin or even how to explain all the minutes of enduring torture I have experienced by having a personal trainer. When we first started going to the gym on a regular basis we tried it for a couple months on our own. We were not getting very many positive or drastic results from these workouts and since I was 40 pounds shy of being 300 pounds, I decided that we needed a huge kick start to this new lifestyle change. We went in and made an appointment with the General Health Manager and he picked out one of his top trainers for us to work with. His name was Dennis Stuart (also known as Derek “Dangerboy” Wylde), and he was a professional wrestler. Upon meeting Dennis, we went over with him what all our goals were and what we were looking to accomplish by working with him, he seemed like a pretty sensible guy. Anyways, our first session arrived and all I remember is how much pain I was in and how much I wanted to give up right then and there. I thought I was going to die.
He put me through a very intense weight lifting workout as well as putting in some cardio aspects. He would make me endure countless minutes, which seemed like forever, of just running up and down a set of stairs in the building. I would whine and complain the entire time because I felt like I was so out of breath by doing this, that I couldn’t breathe. It literally felt like my heart was going to explode right out of my chest. I also remember the excruciating pain in the front of my legs, they felt like they were on fire and were going to give out at any moment. It was a combination of that and the step ups on a stepper that made me want to puke. I remember having to leave my trainer a few times to go to the washroom to throw up. He told me that, that was how I know I have pushed my body to it’s full potential. Back when I started I was lucky to be able to run up the stairs 4 or 5 times before I was ready to pass out, my how times have changed.
Dennis was a tough trainer. But, he knew how to give me the results I wanted and needed. I had sessions with him three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. His philosophy was to keep lifting the weights until you can’t lift no more! If he saw me drop those weights down and knew I had more in me to keep lifting, he would make me pick the weight back up and keep going. If there was ever a time that I stopped before he told me to, he would start counting my reps all over again and I would have to do even more as a punishment for not believing I could do it.
I am just finishing up my last couple sessions with him before I look into some private lessons with him, but I am very proud at everything he has taught me, not only about lifting weights, but about eating the proper foods. Basically, if you don’t have the right nutrition, the workouts won’t benefit as much and I am very thankful for all the time he has put into helping me. He always believed in me, even when I didn’t. He never gave up on me and I love him so much for that. I have even told Dennis on more than one occasion that I love him for everything he’s done for me. I couldn’t have made it this far without him. He will always be a hero to me and my life saver and I am forever in his debt.
