Sugar Loaves Found!
Hello everyone, today after much stumbling around in very overgrown and dense woodland, breaking out in a sweat, I found the elusive Sugar Loaves folly by the Morice family, at Werrington Park in Cornwall. As you may recall from his book, Gwyn could not find them. I am not surprised by this as they are literally now hidden deep in the middle of the woods and beautifully covered in ivy making them almost invisible. Times have changed since Barbara Jones visited and photographed them way back in the 1950's, you could actually see them then! The landscape is now complete woodland, and no paths lead through them or to the folly. When I found it I recorded the follies exact GB Grid point for future GPS reference.
I can report that they still seem to be in good condition so there should be no reason why they shouldn't stand for another 200 years. I will publish my photographs of the visit and a more detailed report on my web site follytowers.com in the not too distant future..
I also recently visited Pentillie Tower and Sir James's terrified statue within it, so this will also be included on my site.

Re: Sugar Loaves Found!
Hi,
Looked at your site, from what i saw it is very good, I can see why towers are so popular with the glorious countryside to view from the top.
Thinking of building my own rather short tower, i live in a 1960's housing estate, entirely suitable for a folly tower!
I will see what planning think in the near future.
Tony

Re: Sugar Loaves Found!
Go for it Tony! You can build a tower up to 4 metres high without planning permission. That might be high enough to look important in a modern housing estate. Do let us know if you succeed!

Re: Sugar Loaves Found!
Dear Carl,
Well done! My husband Pieter and I took pictures of the sugarloafs on 23-7-1990. Comparing them with the pictures in your website I must say that your view from left of the arch is much less obstructed with growth than ours. So perhaps somebody has cleaned, or the invading growth is not attacking all the time.
Do you know that an article by Graham Daw on Werrington Park was published in 'Follies magazine' #55, summer 2003, page 8 and 9? No photographs, but drawings.
Regards,
