Finding information about a Folly which is no longer there!
I am living in a Farmhouse in Bramley, Hampshire. We live on Folly Lane and I am intrigued as to find out whether the road in fact carries a historical reference to a folly which may or may not have been here in years gone by...
I have found a "Floods Folly" noted on an 1810 OS map
http://www.geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/hantsmap/hantsmap/ordnce6/oss12.htm
This is about the right place! I wanted to reach out and see if anyone knew anything about finding information on this kind of thing!!
Thanks
Jenni

Re: Finding information about a Folly which is no longer there!
This sort of thing is always intriguing, but in practice many turn out to be just houses called something Folly. In this case Floods Folly sounds like it may have been a house built on boggy land that flooded frequently, but looking at the map it seems to have been on a hill, and more promisingly it may have been in parkland - there are lodges to the east and west and a Park Lane to the north. As you may know, most follies were built to enhance a park landscape, so any signs that your house may sit in what was once part of the land belonging to a big country house would increase the likelihood it might have been a folly. Good luck with your search.

Re: Finding information about a Folly which is no longer there!
Thanks so much for the advice.
Folly Farm was originally on land that was owned by the Wellington Estate. The house sits on the top of a hill and their are often floods at the bottom of the lane! How would I go about finding any other records relating to the Folly if it had been here apart from the map? Would this be something the local council may have a record of? Has there ever been a list compiled of all the follies in particular regions that I could look for? The local village magazine are really interested in finding out why the lane contains the word Folly..... and i feel, as we are the only residents on the lane, it is up to us to find out more!!
Thanks so much for your advice!

Re: Finding information about a Folly which is no longer there!
I've asked around the FF and got a helpful reply from Andrew:
Bramley is such a small place in northern Hampshire that it shouldn’t be difficult tracking down information on Flood Folly, if it exists. It rings a bell with me too, but I can’t remember where. The best thing would be to start at the County Records Office in Winchester, although there may equally be something at the Basingstoke Library, which is quite good on local history matters – an e-mail to them might yield something. The only note of caution is that Bramley is not far from Reading, so it is possible that information exists there too. As I said, however, an e-mail first would help to sort that out.

Re: Finding information about a Folly which is no longer there!
I wrote to Basingstoke Library to see if there was any additional information in their local studies section, and have copied below the librarian's kind reply. However, it is increasingly looking like the "folly" reference is the old Saxon one meaning a "clump of trees on a hill". If I get a spare moment I will follow up the lead through the Hampshire record Office, unless someone else wants to pick up the thread?

Thank you for your e-mail concerning Floods Folly, at Bramley.
I regret that I have been unable to trace any reference to a folly. There were buildings at the same site on the 1911 map, but I am unable to find any written reference. May I suggest that you contact the Record Office at Winchester as they have a much larger archive than we have at Basingstoke library. The web address is: http://www3.hants.gov.uk/archives.htm and there is a direct e-mail link from the page.
I am sorry I was unable to help in this instance,
