Radio Snobbery

its funny, ive just been reading a bit on junksale. some of the radio hams on there are the one main reason i wont do my M3 licence. They are on there slating a person who uses a superstar 3900 and getting all snobby about how they can use the lower bands. its snobby pricks like that that stops me from doing the test. if people are getting into radio surely its a good thing as long as they arnt messing about. I hate the snobby attitude of some radio hams, they think they are so above the meager CBer. these people need to get a life and get off their high horses. I imagine there would be alot more radio users if the snobbery would disapear.. rant over

Here here emoticon

But you can only change it from within emoticon

If enough of us do the M3 then it will change, and there are many many people doing it, definately breathing a bit of life into radio atm.

But theres the other side too I suppose, those that turn their back on CB, get all high and mighty once they've got into ham, even heard one chap deny he was ever a CBer, and I knew he used to use CB and 555 because I spoke to him there! In fact whilst writing I realise I know two, now, hams that have disappeared up their own bottoms since passing and look down their noses at CB and 27555 when it was this that got them into radio in the first place! emoticon

Re: Radio Snobbery

I've seriously considered going for my foundation licence with a view to eventually getting the advanced, but keep getting put off for various reasons. Last week I very nearly joined a local-ish amateur radio group, but after listening to a couple of guys in QSO on 40 I changed my mind yet again.

They were just talking meaningless drivel, in my opinion, and along with discussing the weather and current affairs (something I didn't think they were supposed to do) made reference to CB being responsible for a lot of RFI complaints they had received recently. I'd rather think it was they who were responsible.

I seriously think that the entire hobby of amateur radio has a bad image - one of old fuddy-duddies with too much time and money on their hands, borne out by a listen on the bands - and this really needs to change, and the best way to acheive this is to bring in some new (and possibly young) blood, and CB operators make the perfect candidates on account of radio experience and interest. As so rightly said, the change needs to occur from within.

Pity to hear of ex-11 metre operators getting all snotty about their origins - bit like ex-smokes maybe. I don't smoke and never have, but I've heard it said that the worst anti-smokers are those who once smoked themselves...
