Power and other information

I use 100 watts on EC, I regularly speak with stations running 500 watts and up, from the UK as well. One particular station in the Netherlands runs 1kw all the time on EC and he is very loud indeedy.

45 metres is used ONLY on LSB by us, between 6.640 and 6.690, about. some Italian stations and Russians station go beyond this but USB is aeronautical weather stations. Mostly text to voice broadcasts from Alaska and Canada. Quite interesting to SWL some of these broadcasts.

86 meters is widely used, probably more so than 45, this is because the props better in the evening here on 86. I can only use 50 watts on 86 as I cause interference with anything more than 60-70 watts. You will here the US when the props there. 13930, 21m is used when the props there but not as much as 45 or 86. I've made contact on 21m with the US and Russia but it was a pre-arranged meeting, which the band is good for, using the Internet to pre-arrange a meeting on the band. Of course once there is some activity you will hear others making use of the band.

I dont know about detection, with modern technics its possible to practically pin point transmissions from anywhere in the UK. They dont even have to go outside to do it. But look at the stats, in the last three years only six prosecutions for illegal CB use with three forfeit orders and no prosecutions what-so-ever for illegal HAM radio use. In these days of phsycopathic fanatics, there are far bigger fish to fry when it comes to illegal comms.

Providing you use a modicom of common sense and dont interfere with others you'll be ok I should think. Ofcom are not stupid they know whats what and whos doing it.

I like EC it has a good freindly atmosphere, the procedure is less formal than even 11 metres, I CQ using a call sign then its not used after that really, some users dont even have call signs or make one up only to forget it ten minutes later!. Some good operators and some very big stations are using EC regularly. Mostly HAMS rather than 11 metres operators to be fair, I only assume this as I dont really know.

Sometimes the band can seem quiet but if you call a few times there's always people listening. It can get quite busy with some big nets that seem to build up because of the activity.

There are loads of irish EC users, its by far the most common division, at least that I've heard so far. But I've not long been an EC user myself
