posticon feel a bit silly

Hi ive got this new rig. It's a ranger 2950.It's brand new out of the box. I have put it in my car in place of the 40 channel cb i had in there. The car is a people carrier so the ground plane is excellent an my swr was always 1-1.1 at worst. Although i don't know how to SWR this new rig to my shame. The arial ive got on the car is a Sirio cb link. The coax is standard but it is new and it leads to a new dv mount. The car battery is new and the power is fine as it powers the dvd player and radio in the car with no probs. I use to fit electrical and bolt on equipment to cars for a living so i am very familier with how to fit most gadgets to vehicles. The cb was a midland multi something or other just a standard type of rig. Ok thats enough of the tech stuff, why can't i hear anything on my Ranger. I took it out on the road last night and heard dxing on 27.5550 in the back ground but not very strong at all. Let me outline the fact that i have been on this and that rig in the past but ive only just come to a rig like this in order to get some experience while i consider a foundation licence. Therfore i now nothing in reletive terms. I must stress that i only want to listen for the time being to gain that experience. What is so annoying is all i want to do is put the rig on while i am driving and enjoy it but if i cannot use it properly i am defeating the objetive.
I am a little emabarressed in admitting all this but i hope you will treat me kindly and help me out.

hi nigel! no need to be embarrased!! this is only a guess but! it could be just bad band conditions!! at the moment we are in the lowest part of the 11 year cycle!!we are all in the same boat!! if it worked ok the other day and your swr is ok and you heard somebody on the band then it could be just bad timeing that no body was about ie local or dx!! OR it could be bad contacts on the antenna somewere? check all conections and see if it changes any thing! good luck mate let us no if anything changes! 73s rich.

Hi Rich, Thank you for your help. I Checked the contacts and all the contacts seem ok the "pl 259's" were soldered at the suppliers and they look solid the coax is free from scuffs or snags. The Midland CB i have works great on this set up. I have tried tuning in to CB frequencies on the Ranger and just get static. I want to learn how to use frequencies properly. I have it on the USB band and tuned into 27.555 most of the time and i run a scan but get nothing. wierd, I do hope it's not so quiet as a rule as i don't want to go back to CB radio. I think i shall join a radio club if i can and tap their brains as well.

Just make sure rf gain is turned up and its not attenuated in any way. Other than that its just the band. If you want a radio test / report then give a shout out on the live messenger above the cluster and someone close will help you out.
I had a similar problem when i put my quad up, i didn't hear anybody for 3 days !
I couldn't work it out and then the band burst wide open and i had 30 plus contacts in 2 days !
Good luck.

I must be using the radio incorrectly I want to thank you so far for being really great to me. It's a real plesure to read the posts all around this site lots of people seem great im glad i found this site.

hi nigel! iam not going to tell you to suck eggs or anything! but as its a new radio to you! the fm 27/81 frequency ie 19 should be 27.78125!!!! you will only be able to get 27.7812 because its only a 6 digit frequencey counter on the rangers!!! does the frequency counter show the correct frequency?? 73s rich.
