Interference.....killing my hobby
I had previously posted my problem with recent inherited interference and thought at first it was PLT broadband equipment. A constant S7 on all fequencies in the spectrum on my Magnum S9. It was always there day in day out at all times of the day. FM wasnt too bad with a S3-4 but I could recall days before this when 19 UKFM at 4am would be a S0.
I have been preparing to call Ofcom to investigate the nuisance interference having already checked my own station/ qth for the cause. I used a 100amp leisure battery and turned off the mains, still there S7 on 555. So .....now as im about to call Ofcom and clear my shack of anything that would make the field engineers eyebrows head north the interference has ceased and for a period of a couple of days. However it has done this before and then re-appeared again then disappeared for a day or so. I have driven away from the house with the S9 in the car and as I drive around the corner the interference kicks in for about 5 houses.... so Im guessing the problem lies there.....however if it is broadband equipment why is there a 2 day lull? Would this be usual? Any thoughts guys? Cheers

Re: Interference.....killing my hobby
An intermittent QRM source - bit of a nightmare, that one.
Are you able to make a recording, using wideband AM so we can listen to it? (broadcast station reception) Quite often this will identify the type of QRM.
As for Ofcom, yep, clean up the place, but remember that FM CB is a legitimate radio and you are entitled to use it without undue QRM. Also, if you have a general coverage receiver, plug that one in - I don't know if you are a licenced 'am or not.
Good luck with sorting your problem; I was faced with S9+ almost everywhere a while back and really didn't know what to do, but after getting advice from the UKQRM forum I reported it to Ofcom who sorted it out. Maybe pay UKQRM a visit and listen to the audio files there - you may recognise the QRM.

Re: Interference.....killing my hobby
hi there! i have similar problems! when i first moved in to my house there was only an s0/s1 of noise! but now in the last 2 years! we have a terrible time with interference! it seems to be when they enabled broadband in our area!!!! also talking to the neighbours! a couple have plasma tvs!! they are real bad for noise! my noise gets a lot worse when the neighbours come in from work!! even more than normal!!!! going back to your problem with a 2 day lay of every now and then!! it could be just luck! may be they turn everything of because they work late or something??? or a factory near by ie fax machine?? theres so many things it could be these days!! you may never find it?? all i know is when my noise pops up i can walk up to the end of my street with a scanner!! and its like the whole street is resonating something no individuals!!! really odd!! i blame the foreign electronics that are allowed into the country with no proper testing!??!! ie hubs?/tvs ect!! we never had this problem in the 90s/80s?? 73s rich.

Re: Interference.....killing my hobby
Cheap switch-mode power supplies, present in so many devices these days, cause a lot of problems - they often inject noise into the mains wiring which radiates it like an antenna. My Netbook PSU gives an S9 noise from 50 metres away!
It seems the EMC/RFI regs are not enforced in any shape or form - the "CE" mark is meaningless.
No wonder so many stations head to the hills for DX these days.
Cheers

Re: Interference.....killing my hobby
try a noise canceller unit it may help or solve your problem eg timewave anc 4, there are other units out there as well.
