back on air!

got my superstar3900 back from rocket all sorted, on frequency and transmiting at correct power, i have learnt my lesson though NEVER buy secondhand from e bay,the amp i bought blown beyond economical repair they say, and as for the 3900 bad uk 40 mod done so after repairs could have bought same set brand new with all mods done for less money, ho hum, have had on since sunday all day long but have heard almost nothing and yet i see that on cluster there is a certain amount of prop, cant even get a radio report from anyone local, i can hear someone on uk40 and i know he can hear me but too far away for any proper chat!, still thinking about going the foundation route as discussed earlier, anyway, rant over, back soon!

Re: back on air!

welcome back, glad the radio is all sorted now. i havnt had any skip contacts but a few good uk ones, mind you i dont hear much uk stuff on my homebase unless its truckers on the A303. I find when i get out on a hill on sundays the radio comes alive, theres alot of earwiggers out there on SSB and usualy get a bit of a chat going on 27,585. HAM licience is a good idea but i stil think its a bit snobby on them bands. are you homebase? and what sort of antennas can you use? might be worth thinking about getting a 0-30mhz radio before doing the licience to se how you get on on Echo Charlie. this is what i'm going to do, get a radio and try out EC if thats cool i wont bother with licence.

keep your ears open on Sundays, i try to get out on a hill in the afternoon, and have had some good distance contacts within the UK

HOLY MOSES!!!!!!!!!

yesterday i just had my rant and posted it here then my freind wanted me to see if his uk 40 was working in his car[just fitted] so we had a chat and all was fine, i then flicked through the uk 40 and found a lot of noise on one particular channel, it turned out not to be on fm but on am and was a couple of italians just chatting-no call signs or fancey stuff, super strong signal, clear and both sides of the conversation, i then went straight to 555 and WOW!! wall to wall stations for about an hour, most seemed to be italian but i did hear english spoken and possible german, did not manage to contact anyone but its a start, i now know that the radio/antenna does recieve!! very pleased!!

i will follow your progress as i too thought about going that route, i think i have found a ham teacher that is not at all snobby[ie he said that lots of foundation holders use the full output of there radios and he didnt have an issue with that] but i agree thats the impression you get isnt it? what size antenna do you need for echo charlie!
can you be mobile or only homebase! any usefull websites on this subject? also can you use a "widebanded" radio if you are a "proper" ham? questions questions, many thanks, unclejessie.

Echo Charlie is the 45m band a half wave antenna would be 22.5m eters long emoticon

There are 45m mobile antennas around, home made for the most part. There are loads of home options, G5RV being the simplest probably emoticon Best with a matcher unless you tune for EC specifically.

Yes a wide banded radio will access EC as well as the 11m band, and plenty of other bands as well usually emoticon

Outside definately better without a doubt, but ask Paddy, topbuzz fb118 he's just put a wire dipole in the loft. He could probably give you a better idea on how they work emoticon

i can say the recieve is pretty good when there is skip, havnt spoke to anyone yet. i want a two way antenna switch so i can have my boomerang and the V up at the same time so i can switch between them to se a diference if any. all i can say is try and se, mine is only a 1/4 wave for 27mhz so isnt as long as g5r...v and fits well
