skip?

hi all, on sunday i managed to chat to a guy from a town about 35 miles away, his signal went from being very weak to very strong he told me that a station from hastings[mobile] could hear me fine but i could not hear him at all[this is more like about a hundred miles] was i recieving him via "prop" or do you think it was direct ground wave?, i feel that i call sq and the replys are to weak for me to make any sense of, is this my cheapskate £20 half waves fault? anyway i found this site for calculating "as the crow flies" distances, try it, its good fun!

Could be Ground wave at that distance, and could be local prop also. More likely GW though as you would probably hear other stations on skip conditions emoticon

Good to hear you're using the radio more, there have been some good EU conditions last few days with many stations fromsth EU particularly calling. Should be able to work some EU with your radio and antenna emoticon

Re: skip?

its a slow process as i only get a small amount of time to be on the radio, due to work commitments etc, also i realise the limits of my radio more as time goes by, some of the frequencys that stations go to are a challenge to say the least, i presume that side of it as made easier with a "proper" radio, i am encoraged though! i dont think that my location is that great as there are many electical items in the area, it will be interesting when i get mobile up my nearest not very high hill.

Re: skip?

i doubt its the antenna, just conditions. i found i could hear people better in the mobile than i was getting out to them. I always set up my antennas to receive as best they can, you can always add an amp to boost your outgoing. Your half wave should work ok with skip, ive had a couple of contacts in the last 2 days on my wire inverted V thats in the loft, its poop for groundwave but seems to work on the skip.
