Re: 2 metres

brent i have listened to alot of older guys who think they are above everyone else.. what the amatuer bands need is an injection of younger users to give radio a more relaxed feel, during my practical(tx on vhf) i said "operator would be Patrick" to a station i was makin contact with, and a teacher said "it either is or it isnt, not would be". This is the sort of anul thing i dont like, after all people from all over the country talk diferently and have diferent ways of speaking/saying things... i have listened to USA stations on 80m and they seem alot more relaxed the way they speak and not so anul. We need to get alot more younger blood on there to get a new wave of operators, things have to change or i can se ham bands dying off(accept for 2m which is basically a bit of a snobby CB band), lol

well done on the radio purchase, dont be put off using HF as i will be on there shoutin out as soon as i get my antennas up emoticon

What would be good is if we get a net together on the ham bands and see if any other opps try and join in with us. The yanks are much more relaxed and more likley to have a long chat on there though.

posticon Re: 2 metres

I've been working 17 metres for the last week and a half and have to say that so far the experience has been all good.

I've worked a couple of "You're 5 and 9,73s" stations in Cuba and Bolivia but have worked "Soyer"1B1AB in Cyprus a couple of times and various US stations with all contacts being good rag chews on a par with 11 metres for friendliness and informality....ie. there weren't call signs after every single over.

In my case I've decided to work 17 as the antenna can be slightly smaller than on 20 but with very similar band characteristics to 20 although less densely populated giving a 100 watt station a real chance to be heard......flitting across all the bands trying to find a spot that feels familiar is a bit disheartening as there is band migration with the herd often following pointers from a DX cluster or the natural tendency to follow the grey line or MUF as it rises.

Even on 17 and allowing for my Noob keeness I still don't try to work all stations I hear as a few minutes spent listening prior to trying a tail end call will give an idea of whether you really want to talk to the station concerned....in my case I'm afraid a lot of ex Soviet Union country rubber stamp operators tend to leave me a bit underwhelmed.

One other thought and this might change if I install a multi band wire is how disappointing a vertical antenna and ATU combination are for working DX....I've given up a bit on this already as the background noise and lack of directional control over the radiated signal have,I've found, been too frustrating to persevere with.

Brent you don't want a vanity call when you first start out as it could work against you.....I might be the only one thinking this but generally the supposedly private registration plate on a car often gives a different impression of the owner/knob than the one he/she might be trying to promote by displaying it....also let's face it you won't have time to think about a better call sign when you're first let loose on HF which can be CB like on all bands if you find like minded Hams.

Paddy as I've said if you want a hand when it comes to clogging your garden absolutely solid with antennas I'll help if I can.....well ok I won't contribute to the retrospective planning application after the inevitable confrontation with your new neighbours but if we start of with say a 2 element 40 metre antenna and slip the smaller ones in when no one's looking we should be ok! Dave.

yea dave.i agree.private plates are cheesball.ill get what im given call wise but read somewhere that it was a prefix plus the first 3 letters of your surname.upon further research m3ham and m6ham are allocated allready.didnt realise you could order a "vanity call" but i think ill give those a wide birth mate lol.
guaranteed ill let slip the old 26fb99 somewhere down the line and get destroyed the crustys.
yamanx dave, gonna check the pm now mate.
