Re: Hi all

Welcome to the site emoticon

Your radio should be fine, no probs there, get a bit of power if you can, we are at the bottom the cycle right now and the propagation is very low. But good news is its on the rise slowly.

Depends what you want to do, for DX my advice is a wire dipole in the loft or in the eves, but that will be pretty usless for local work.

Paddy FB118 has a loft antenna, he can probably help better. emoticon

hi simon, welcome to the forum. I'm using a 1/4 wave Sirio Boomerang in the loft, you need a tall'ish loft as its just over 9 foot. They do a shorter version but this effects performance a little. They arnt much good for FM use unless you live on top of a hill or you can mount them up a church steeple, but they work ok on SSB(555). The only thing i think the antenna could benefit from is the little groundplane removing and 3, 9 foot coax groundplanes fitting to the base as this i think would help better radiate the signal in all directions.

i think you could probably build a 1/4 wave in your loft out of wire that worked just as well as the boomerang. Heres some plans for a 1/4 wave, all the solid matel part of tthe antenna can be replaced with the same length of wire

Re: Hi all

Thanks guy's, for all your info and help emoticon and paddy great link cheers. I think the Sirio Boomerang looks a good deal and should fit well in the loft, also i have some spare copper wire around the place and im thinking of constucting a wire dipole as suggested by keith 139 and yamanx1
but could any one give me the length to cut it please? sorry for all the questions emoticon but im looking forward to being back on the air emoticon .

Regards Simon.

Re: Hi all

i took this from a web site, i think these measurements are for the mid band 27mhz, if you build the antenna a couple of inches longer than the measurments you can always trim it to tune it in

For a quickie CB antenna, a vertical dipole (1/2) wave can be made right from the coax itself You take your coax and very carefully, without nicking the braided shield, strip 102 inches of the outer insulation jacket off one end. After removing the outer jacket, start bunching the shield down the coax from the end. Now, where the outer jacket and the shield meet, separate the braided shield enough to get the inner conductor out through the hole in the braid. Pull all of the inner conductor through and stretch it and the braid out. Be careful not to skin any of the insulation off the inner conductor. Now attach an antenna insulator to the end of the inner conductor. Measure the braided shield. Cut it off at about 106" and attach an antenna insulator to the end. The total length of the inner and outer conductor should be about 17 feet (1/2 wave). You can haul it up to any height you want with a string or rope attached to the insulator on the center conductor. It's a good idea to coat the end of the coax cable where it separates with some kind of waterproof sealer. This keeps water from seeping into the coax, which could cause a high SWR.

Just attach a coax connector on the end of the coax going to your transceiver and you are on the air. The SWR should be 1.5 or better, if cut to the proper length. It'll get out about as good as a ¼ wave ground plane CB radio antenna if you get it up high and in the clear. Do not hoist this antenna up next to a metal pole, because the metal will interfere with the antenna's operation and cause a high SWR.

Re: Hi all

good morning 1/2 wave diploe easy ?
get your self 2 x 18" pieces of wire copper,or flexy .1 x balun,1 x 50hm coax,2 x isolaters,
join either end of wire to balun, connect coax to balun via pl259 to swr meter,to radio, trim back to swr to your tx freq, put insolaters on each end of wire.host up in to postion,east-west,or south -north,depending which way you want to tx.
or you can buy a aluminum one and mount horozontail?? emoticon
any probs ask can't think of calication for exact length of wire @ work????
easy to find on the net?
