Need Help with Kenwood TS870 Service Menu.

For those that are not aware the service menu on the TS870 can be activated by holding down the NR and LSB/USB while turning the power on, this brings a menu of 28 settings, these settings are not affected by doing a factory reset so be careful.

I would appreciate it if somebody would send me the 28 settings of their TS870 from the service menu, I am having problems trying to calibrate the S meter and ALC scales etc on mine, I cannot seem to adjust them to the proper parameters.

Thanks

Re: Need Help with Kenwood TS870 Service Menu.

Thanks for the replies, it will be interesting to see the settings compared to mine, I shall put mine on too.

In the mean time I am particularly interested in the A1 (ALC) setting and also the A7, A8, A9 and AA (Power Adjustment setting) bearing in mind that you need to push Send to TX to get these ones.

I am interested to hear what the AM output power on other TS870's is, I'm getting 25 watts reading on the internal power meter which is correct according to the specs but no output whatsoever on an external meter connected to a dummy load!??! actually I cannot even generate enough power to calibrate an external SWR meter while putting a carrier out on AM.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

ive done the alc mod to mine, i did this a few years ago now so i cant remeber exactly whats involved but its availiable on the qrz, and mainy other sites, it involves replacing a surface mount resistor ' steady hands needed ' but it really worked for me, alc was not so jumpy ' pumping' radio sounded a bit cleaner and the power went up a bit, i havent touched the settings though, 70 watts pep from the radio on talk on ssb is enough to drive most hf linears to full power, increasing the radio power does generally create more imd.

Hi Patrick,

I also run a TS-870 and I can give all the info you require regarding the Service Menu settings.
You will need a accurate DC volt meter, dummy load and power meter.

Regards

Steve.

Re: Need Help with Kenwood TS870 Service Menu.

Thanks Marc for taking the time to do that for me, your settings are very similer to a friend of mine with a TS870.

Theses are my settings, quite a bit different.

(ALC, A1=bc),

(S Meter SSB, A2=05, A3=60, A4=80)

(Filter, A5=00, A6=00)

(Press send to adjust these, Power Adjustment, A7=cF, A8=70, A9=60, AA=50)

(These settings all move each time I transmit, TX Gain, Ac, Ad, AE, AF, b0, b1, b2, b3)

(ALC Meter, b4=10, b5=20, b6=30)

(SWR Protection, b7=30)

(Swr Meter b8=iE)

(FM b9=80)

Re: Need Help with Kenwood TS870 Service Menu.

Hi Patrick,

To set the ALC Ref A1 you need to take a voltage reading from TP2, the ref voltage you need is 2.70v. You can find TP2 once you remove the bottom cover, it's just above the 455Khz filter, just use the RIT XIT knob to adjust the voltage.

I would say by the readings you have for the S meter is giving you low signals, as a starting point A2 wants to be 12 A3 50 A4 at 80 is Ok.
You can get these figures by leaving the antenna connected and use the RF knob, when you back it off you will see the numbers come down when you see the right number hit the UP button.

I know the filters shouldn't both read zero but you need the proper test gear to set this one. You could try Marcs setting and see how it goes.

Your output power is only as accurate as the power meter you are using to test it, but as long as you are within a couple of Watts you will be OK.

The TX gain settings do the same as the ALC meter they automatically set them selves after the beep press the up button.
If you try to reset them after you have set them they will give a different value but it should be close to the first setting.

The ALC numbers you have are like a default setting. To set B4 B5 B6 press transmit and it will calibrate it's self automatically B4 1 dot B5 Max ALC zone and B6 full scale.

The last three B7 B8 B9 are the same settings as on mine.
And after setting don't forget to go to the BA setting and press the UP button.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Steve.

Thank you Steve for that info, it was very helpful, i've got it sorted now I think, the ALC voltage was a bit high so that is fixed now, as is the S meter.

The b4, b5, b6 was a bit of a nightmare to set previously but that is fixed too and I am reasonably pleased with it now.

Thanks again all.
