Audio heard through internal speaker??
i've just recieved the Ranger VR9000 i bought on fleabay. On FM the radio is fine but when on AM or SSB you can hear your voice through the internal speaker. This only happens with the echo turned on, turn the echo completly off and the audio disapears from the internal speaker. I dont use echo on SSB so this isnt a problem, i just wondered why it might do it as the other ranger i have doesnt do this??
other than the above the radio seems fine and does look new, i havnt had a QSO on it yet but as soon as my m8 gets on the comp i will get him to give me a radio report

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
Sounds like the talk back feature fitted to President Lincolns. Do the VR9000's not have the talk back feature? Maybe someone fitted it to the second one?

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
well..... i got a radio reprt off my mate 8 miles away, he mentioned it wasnt as loud and clear as my cobra. i plugged the cobra in and he reported the signal was up and the audio alot louder. i checked with my power meter and the cobra is about 12watts on ssb and the ranger is showing more on the meter about 14watts. I dont understand how it can be showing as putting out more than the cobra but it sounds quieter and gives less signal. anyone got any ideas?? if its a cheap fix i'll do it, but if not looks like i will be emailing the chap tomorrow and telling him i want my cash back

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
Is this on SSB? If it is it sounds like an audio issue, try swapping the mic's with your other one. It could still be an audio issue if its on FM, but the signal should be the same?

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
yes on SSB, i never even thought to get a rig check on FM. I think its aduio issue, when i whistle there is loads of power, when i talk into mike the needle hardly moves. I have tried standard mikes and power mikes but its stil the same, the roger beep keys up to good power but my voice doesnt. It seems strange it has a audio problem on transmit SSB and the audio comes out the speaker with the echo switched on, my other vr9000 works on SSB with echo. this one is deffo something audio chip or something. I've opened a dispute on paypal so lets wait and se what is said, i've asked for a refund as i'm not paying out more money to fix this, just have to keep my eyes open for another radio and hopefully find something off of ebay. Like the radio i got from you Dave which is working excellently... bloody ebay

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
sadly this is common-place. i wondered why it went so cheaply!
it may be that the guy that sold it to you never checked it on ssb - what does the original advert say? If it says the radio was in full working order you have a leg to stand on. If he has posted something like - no returns, sold as is, etc, you havent.
i notice most people selling cb's on ebay have started putting 'no returns' on their equipment simply becuase people buy the rigs on ebay, connect them up all wrong, blow them up, then make a claim on paypal which freezes the sellers account.
i sold a perfectly good pa amplifier to a guy, who 2 MONTHS LATER mailed me to say it didnt work and he had been 'ill' and had lodged a complaint with e bay/paypal.
i then ended up having to reimburse the buyer and got the amp back - and it was totally fried internally (you could smell the burnt bits), he must have ragged the guts out of it.
anyway - its quite possible that the mike is wired up wrong, or someone has connected the two wires on the board going from the talk back and the echo together. i can see why a talkback function is there, at least you know if you have mod or not, but i just use the stalker to check the output of my EDX. (should have bought that one when you had the chance LOL)
anyway let us know what transpires - dont go headlong in to a full-on dispute if you can help it - most people do actually want to have a good ebay experience - i always e mail people first - then if i dont get a decent or quick enough response, then i report - and ive only had to do that twice so far in four years.
good luck!

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
its strange cos it has audio their its just not strong, the roger bleep seems to swing the needle right over but narmal talk doesnt move it much at all. the guy left me good feedback yesterday at some point, after i had opened a dispute on paypal. stil no reply from him....
heres what he put in the auction
"VOYAGE CB as new comes with box and manual and origanal mic 25.615 - 28.305 MHz
full spec can be seen here http://www.cbradio.nl/voyage/frames_voyage_vr9000.htm
my wife bought me this not knowing i had a 706
it has the mobil mounting bracket but not the mounting screws that go on to the radio
thanks
have now found all the bits and bobs that go with it .
This radio is like new and boxed"
...... If this radio just needed adjusment and i could find out how to do it, i wouldnt mind. but its just screamin out audio chip or worse to me. as for talkback i dont think the vr9000 has this facilaty on it. i may be wrong. i really dont want to touch the radio with a screwdriver, i would rather just get my cash back and buy something else.

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
hmm.
do audio chips really go that much? what could blow one? too much gain? i can't see that really.
i reckon thats fixable - nothing on the advert gives the game away - but he didnt say it was 'in full working order'. caveat emptor i think applies here! (let the buyer beware!)
I thought that advert looked suspicious - no woman i know would buy a radio for a bloke, let alone not know if he already had one.
If you get really stuck send it to me here at my workshop and i'll have a look at it - if it needs a new audio chip i could get one and fit it.
Or, you could just sell it to some other poor bugger!

Re: Audio heard through internal speaker??
the chap has offered a refund, he didnt pack it very well at all. no bubble wrap or anything, the buttons were just bouncin off cardboard so damage could of happend in transit. i'm disapointed cos it was in good condition but now looking for another radio
