...jims got a new rig!
yep, went mental and bought a 158EDX.
bloody lovely looking radio, just like a cobra 148 with a frequency counter.
anyone got one of these, anything i need to be aware of?
Im thinking of installing it in the homebase and taking the icom out in the tourbus; (i can only get one antenna up so vhf/uhf is out at home, may as well use it mobile)
mines the one with the red display not the blue.
can anyone point me in the right direction of a manual? online or otherwise?

Re: ...jims got a new rig!
ahhh, thankee kindly.
right, while were about it, i'm going to be mega critical of this rig as a review, just in case anyones thinking of buying one.
This is a very good radio - the first thing you notice is the softness of the selector switches - the old cobra rotaries could be quite hard to turn if you had just eaten a particularly greasy burger - but these are easy to use. A bit too easy in fact, sometimes you can overselect.
the volume control is a bit finnicky to get just right, (esp in home environment) but seems just as sensitive on RX as the Icom which i was quite suprised about.
Echo unit. Normally i HATE these things BUT i have to say, the built in version on this radio is very nice, almost as good as a guitar floor pedal, and you can actually adjust the amount of repeats as well as the rate - however i would have liked to have seen a 'depth' control, so i could set it more in the background, but that really is a minor gripe.
This particular radio has amazing frequency coverage. Lowest edge, 24.2585Mhz (indicated) to 29.6635Mhz - where, incidentally, i found a peculiar AM broadcast station.
Convinced it was a harmomnic, i tried the icom and the Icom hears it but not quite a s well as the EDX. That impressed me, and it does take a lot to impress my pessimistic ass!
A few more tests, and it really isnt as sensitive as the Icom (as i suspected) BUT it does give it a good run for its money - distant ssb station son the groundwave i could hear on the icom were unheard on the edx.
I have also come to the conclusion that this flippin' antron is DEAF as a post.
I get a better signal if i disconn ect the outer on the coax, so im going to look about for a nother antenna i think.
All in all, so far, this is a great rig - trasmitted audio is nice, good echo, bit of frequency drift on startup but after a few mins it settles down, and freqwuency coverage makes it a Tri-Bander of sorts, just what i needed.
more findings later!

Re: ...jims got a new rig!
update.
fixed the radio into the IVECO today, much to amusement of local children.
found the best antenna to use mobile was the fibreglass 9 foot whip i had - mounted that onto a large shock spring, and that in turn to a mega ball-joint mobile mount, just behind the drivers door pillar.
i treid several antennas and got hese results
wallen centre load modulator - 1.5-1 on 27megs dead, rose sharply a until 3-1 at 28.5.
26.5 3-1 also
sirtel centre load.
1.2-1 on 27megs dead, 2-1 at 29mhz, 2-1 at 26megs
9 foot fibreglass whip with extention of approx 3" at the top
24.3 - 2.5-1
25.5 - 1.8-1
26 - 1.2-1
27 - 1-1 (no movement!!)
28 -1.2-1
29.6 - 2-1
so im pretty happy with that result!!!!!
all in need now are some rig chekcs.
it seems to me that all the local breakers at my qth (thurrock, essex) are running linears - i was thinking of getting a mobile boot, but what models allow the higher output of the edx? or should i go in and turn the wick down to prevent overdriving the linear? looking to get somehwere in the region of 500w for mobile.

Re: ...jims got a new rig!
could be a change of plan now. im not having m,uch luck with the edx in the van - im getting some sort of warbling going on with the rig, im told it sounds like im using a linear when mobile?
Ive just tested the radio indoors on a dummy load and listened to the tx audio on my icom and it sounded fine on all bands, all modes and all frequency edges - so im blaming rf feedback from the 9 foot whip, which is approx 32 feet behind my ear behind the drivers door!
have decided to run the icom in the van (that way i can use my nice multiband vertical mobile whip) and see how that works - and install the edx as homebase.
Got a price of 30 EURO to deliver the maco 5/8 vertical i was after, 45 euro price, so not too sad.

Re: ...jims got a new rig!
i suffer rf feedback in the mobile, using the astatic i got a carrier on ssb just like in the house. i got a clip on ferrite choke and wound the mic lead through it twice and clipped it up and it sorted it. ive never had as many problems with a mobile setup before this landrover discovery, its been a right pain in the arse

Re: ...jims got a new rig!
yes im thinking of chokes too. ive got some in the garage somewhere! i keep seeing them and thinmk 'i might need that', then get sidetracked and forget where i saw them. LOL.
Incidentally, the lat time i ran the icom mobile (admittedly into a bit of a high swr) i managed to fry the alternator (£120) and im just a little worried ill do it again - should be ok, swr really low on most of 25/26/27/28 with the 9 foot whip so perhaps i'll start on low power and gradually increase it - or run it at 50w all the time.
