New Radio Ordered today

I'll be back!

Just ordered an Icom IC-706MKIIGDSP .

Should arrive by Saturday, already have a Sirio 3000 mobile antenna so I may well be QRV on 11Meters sometime soon.

Modified from the outlet for free.

Anyone have one?

73s

Flipping 'eck, straight in with the big gun then emoticon

Done muck about will yer emoticon

Keith 26FB139 has one and Sound man Jim has one. Apparently they're all the rage emoticon

A pukka radio by all accounts, covering just about every band, downside is you'll need a degree to work the menu's. Only kidding, but there is a lot to learn about these radios and I have spoken to operators with weird and wonderful settings creating all kinds of crap audio.

However once mastered they are the FDB!

Good luck with it, let us know when you have her up and running and what "other" antennas you are going to have apart from 11m emoticon

Re: New Radio Ordered today

yep, certainly do - and it's the third one i've owned - i'm not selling this one!!

Anyway - there are a few things you should be aware of on the 706 - my friendly BE AWARE notice!!!

for a start - don't leave it plugged in (and by plugged in i mean with the white plastic connector on the back still connected) when you park the car. (if using it mobile)
For some daft reason the Icom draws about 1 amp +/- even when its swicthed off on the front and if you leave the car for a few days, the battery will be flat.
Solve the problem by putting a nice heavy duty switch in line and turn it off after hitting the front off-switch - you'll hear the relay inside click when you do, so you know its definately disconnected.

DONT TRY TO TX between 30MHZ-47Mhz - there is a band pass filter in there that effectively blocks the output of the rig and it will BLOW ITSELF UP if you hold the key in for too long! (mate found that out the hard way!!!)

It looks like it will TX on 70Mhz as well, but it doesn't - the tx light will go on but the TX will be out of lock.

Next - don't go poking about inside with your screwdriver - the components are VERY DELICATE and you will bugger it if you decide to go in!!

It gets quite hot on TX, but don't be alarmed - enjoy the warmth!!!

The WFM reception between 88-108 is adequate - don't expect it to be as good as your old sony hi-fi - it won't be!

The fan in the rig can be a pain when you're using a base mike indoors (it's quite loud) - get the seperation cable (OPC581/OPC587) and mount the rig nearer the psu and away from your desk - or even nearer the antenna which would be better, then do what i did and make a little wooden plinth to sit the control head on.

Be very careful if you try to put a different mike on it - there are volts coming out the front and if you short it its goodbye 706! Use the OPC589 adaptor to convert to 8 pin mikes.

lastly - DO NOT ON ANY ACCOUNT be tempted to fix an antenna switch inline with the HF/50 ant socket and the 144/432 antenna socket so you can use one aerial on all bands - you will blow up the reciever!
I use a switch on the hf/50 outlet to switch between my 6 meter mobile antenna and the 9 foot whip.

The rig takes 20AMPS on transmit flat out on FM so make sure the PSU is up to the job!!!

The built in swr meter DOES NOT LIE but it only works up to 50Mhz.

LOL hope that didnt scare you - but forewarned is forearmed as they say!
enjoy the rig!!!!

If it Aint broke, don't fix it, and if you do, don't tell anyone you touched it

Re: New Radio Ordered today

Very good advice indeed and thanks for that.

I will need to order another cable for the power in due time as I want it mobile and Base.

Thank goodness I have no intention of poking around inside it, wouldn't know where to start.

Also, thanks for the info about not transmitting between 30+47Mhz, I'm not a wild pirate but I do key up in some strange places from time to time, just to test.

This thing will TX on PMR too I'm guessing.

Finally, does anyone know of a pirate band around 6Meters?
I think there is but is it widely used?

My next issue is home antennae. I did this the wrong way again. Was intending to plan the set up then get the radio but that's me.

I guess I'll get some kind of wire system set up for the lower bands and a scanner aerial for the VHF section.

Mobile is 11 but I do have an extended 40M whip for 45Meters. (Seeing is beleieving).

Anyhow, hope it arrives very soon indeed, should be dispatche today after they have modified it.
I've seen loads of positive reviews and I've had so many radios over the years that I didn't mess around thinking too long.

I'll let you guys know when it arrives and I hope you don't mind the questions.

A long time has passed since the 90s emoticon

Re: New Radio Ordered today

no worries!

regarding a pirate band on 6 metres, i still go on 49Mhz (allegedly) you just have to find a quiet spot amongst the baby alarms!

yes, the icom 706 will track all 8 pmr 446 channels EXACTLY; ive got them as 8 selectable channels and it works very well indeed.

regarding homebase operation - i was thinking of getting a q-tek penetrator as it doesnt seem to take up too much room and alleges to swr on all the amateur band without an ATU - that remains to be seen - i was going to build my own using a 8 metere long roach pole blank ive got (its telescopic) and wind a load of copper wire up it and use that.

Re: New Radio Ordered today

I'll take a look at that ant you mention,

I have been put off home QRV as I had a bad experience with an A99 and a Pres Jackson 5 years ago, messed up some TVs in my village.

That was the first and last return to the airwaves since the 90s.

No wonder! A99 is prone (I have now discovered thanks to this forum) and Pres Jackson is perhaps not a quality radio.

Looking forward to this radio arriving, I hope it's tomorrow but now I'm sounding like a kid with a toy on the way !
