This is the one I would choose from all the radios you have mentioned. This is a real pukka radio. OK I know its quite an old model. The only gripe, and its a small one, is theres no built in swr meter. But apart from that these are really the business.

They are'nt over complex and they dont need to be the recieve is phenominal for a radio of this age, it will do everything you want without too many bells and whistles. No menus to get used to as all the adjustments have proper knobs emoticon

I really wanted one of these as I know several owners, it is very rare you'll see these for sale as the owners hang on to them for keeps. I tried for months to get one, you'll see a wanted ad on here some where emoticon Only I just couldnt find one for sale. In the end the, very similar, IC 735 came up and I bought that instead.

Incidently the IC 735 is a real good choice as well, I love mine and its small enough to go mobile with. There have been reports, though that the 735 is fragile as a mobile unit. The 840 though at around the same size has no such problems.

Goo choice emoticon

Difficult question, 250 is good for this radio if its 100%, but its an oldie compared to say the IC 706, But for me the FT has some advantages, I'm not a big fan of micro radios with menu control, I like knobs a dials.emoticon A 706 will use all your budget up.

You could get yourself some other equip with the change. Some audio kit for instance, or a linear, ATU etc etc.
