John I notice you've suported it with a system like a yacht mast, but whats the "boubles" (For want of a better description) every metre or so on the support cables for?

They are insulators on the stainless cables they stop the lobe from being distorted by unwanted parasitics they do work too the lobe is only beam width is a narrow 15 degrees to the -3db points so its a pencil like beam trouble is theat a pointing error of a few degrees and its bye bye QSO but when its on target its phenominal even by my picky standards. If you want any figures through eznec let me know, you can download a copy and work through yourself but its quite technical however but you will learn loads about antennea.

hi john! iam just curious! but would you have problems with static build up on a monster like that?? i believe you can see a few hundred volts on monster antennas due to it being exposed metal and lots of it!! do/would you use some sort of arrester?? 73s rich.

Your right Rich i've got 2 on the feeder one on the boom and another on the rotator cable, just in case. Its the lightning strike hazard which craps me most. If it took a direct hit and fell it would come down doing a few knots i'm sure. The lightning conductor runs down both booms down the scaf tube and down the tree to four copper 6' spikes and thats all I could aford to put on it. I'm not getting static noise so I guess its leaking down the lightning arrestor kit, well I hope it is.

Hi Brent chief, its great the Earth moves for me when it rotates but i'm gonna have to nurse it through the storms, i was up on the boom yesterday (great view)its got so much weight that it doesnt seem too mind the wind much (he said cautiously) its easy to df me though it can be seen two miles away. I was thinking of sticking a web cam on it facing beam direction then others can see if i'm gonna aim the artillery at them!!!!(3SD327 thought it was a howitzer!)

Got a bird strike from a pidgeon going with the winds at the weekend, the reflector took the hit and its bent the element about 20 degrees. The mast 2 1/2 inch steel pipe took a bend under the strain so i have to drop it down for repairs when the weather gives me a break. Oh well no pain. I think i will attach some fishing line to the ends of all elements when its down so that if it takes a hit then all the elements share the impact and hopefully they won't bend.

Looking very sad at the moment.
The anemometer on the mast also sheared off at 90mph the last recorded reading. I hope everyone else faired alot better.
