telivision interference

does anyone have views on the subject of interference! can you operate with modest power, lets say 150 watt ssb and not destroy your tv, digi box signal etc etc, is digital tv/sky less receptive or not? i have read that you need to take out swr meters to reduce interference but if you are using a matcher you cant take it out can you, any thoughts would be helpfull, thanks uncle jessie 26fb133.

Wow a big subject emoticon

I'll do my best to answer some of it tomorrow, and I'm sure some others will chip in here as well.

But just to say I use 800w without causing tvi emoticon

Re: telivision interference

There are dozens of reasons for causing TVI, mostly now days this doesnt happen so much because diital TV doent suffer from tvi anywhere near as much as the old analogue tv did.

But there is still some risk of tvi and interference to other stuff, like baby monitors and radios etc.

First thing that must be right is your swr, it needs to be as perfect as you can get it, and time spent doing this will be time well spent.

Good coax and connections

Grounding, this makes all the difference. All your kit, including any radio, PSU, ATU everything must have a seperate earth wire to ground. There has been some debate on here about earthin, but I suggest you bang a copper pipe, rod, whatever into the ground as deep as you can and run fairly heavy duty wire to it from your kit. And from the aerial. Thats direct from the antenna, dont rely on the pole.

If you still have issues there are lots of other things, like RF chokes, baluns etc. but those are the main bits to get right.

If you need any help at all with TVI give us a shout as I have had my fair share of it, sorted now on most bands at very high power.

High power doesnt cause interference, but if there is any at all then more power will dramatically increase it.

i have used a inline low pass filter for ever & a day, used to do next doors telephone, but it was the phone just got some ferrete rings cured it,but you can also get high pass filters for the tv.but i always use good quality coax, make sure swr is as low as poss, but mordern radio's dont splatter so much nowdays,it's only when linears r overdrove by audio,or swr is out a prob usaually occuors?no probs running swr/matchers in line so long as patch leads r good.and yes earth every thing & not to your mains earthing, central heating ,a outside seperate earth is best?

when you say earth every item, do you mean to connect a wire to say the case of the item in question ? could you bring them all together as one "multi earth" and then run one wire down to ground ,if so could that wire be routed alongside the coax to get outside[dont want to many holes in my old house, plus the wife wont ba at all impressed!] thanks, more stupid questions to follow, unclejessie.

...get a ground rod - a big copper thing with a terminal on the end of it - clobber it into the ground as far as you can by your antenna (check there isnt a flippin' power line, sewage or water pipes down there first tho!!) and connect some reasonably heavy earth cable to it.
If you use the yellow/green stripey stuff, at least youll be able to see it and not trip over it!!

ground the base of the mast to the rod, then also connect the outer of the coax to it.

Even better, take an earth wire into the house alongside the coax and connect it to the first water pipe you can find . NOT the mains electric earth!!
Then, in the shack, ground the rig or atu/coax/swr meter/burner/whatever to the radiator or nearest water pipe.

This way you should also be protecting yourself from lightening strikes - believe me, my mate lives on top of a hill, and every time a thundercloud goes over, he can light a striplamp bulb on the coax connector as the cloud goes over. LOL

that should all serve as a good earth.

Additionally, buy some copper sulphate crystals, mix them with water and drown the area around the copper earth rod to maximise earth connection.

If it Aint broke, don't fix it, and if you do, don't tell anyone you touched it
