which should i go with
ok guys here goes my question of the week lol
im thinking about making my station a little stronger whilst im out on the hills....
trouble is i dont have the money to get everything at once!
so.....
do i go for a decent ATU and pre-amp first...
or
a homebase antenna and some poles so i can mount it to a fence somewhere?! and possibly a power mic gets thrown in there too somewhere! although i havent had any problems from anyone about my audio!
cheers
dave

Re: which should i go with
For what its worth I would go for the aerial first as that would benifit you both in transmiting and recieving. I have been thinking of getting a SY27 dipole and using it for horizontal work and for about £30 its not expensive! And its easy enough to take up the hills!
Hope we get points for our answers.
Would love to try out a big beam up the hills, haha

yeah i would too but im far too cautious and i cant find a place quiet enough for my liking and would rather not attract attention to myself! but i think a beam could be on my wish list

Re: which should i go with
Dave, you dont need an ATU if your SWR is right, whatever the power.
If you want to "get out better" the best way is antenna, as already said then power then audio, imo.
If you've got good swr, can hear what you want to work and can work your mobile station with the engine running splash out on an astatic road devil and a RM KL500 amp

Re: which should i go with
As the ANTENNA is 95% of a station thats the best qso/buck you can get. Its no good havin a big mouth with no ears (MP'S note), unfortunately many stations do. I cant stress the effectivness of height gain enough on vhf/hf bands (3db gain for 4xheight). Atu's have a place but not if you can work around them by good tuning and do not get paranoid about swr. Anything below 3 is acceptable, below 2.5 is great, below 2.0 deserves a mention in qsb monthly, below 1.7 then the nine-oclock news, below 1.5 gets you a VC, below that and something is probably starting to lie to you. Re: which should i go with
My 45m band vertical shows 1.1:1 on 6670, but when you look at a theoretical 35 ohms radiation resistance then add on enough grund loss R to bring things up to 50 ohms-ish it dosn't look quite so efficient!
So - do I get a medal then??
